It makes the African category come out as mere tokenism to keep us happy. Although this was the second time that African artists have been nominated in the BET Awards, this year saw a separate category for the African acts which also included D-Black (Ghana), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), and Teargas (South Africa).

The much anticipated MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with Airtel came off last night at the Eko Expo Hall, Lagos with one or two surprises. One of the biggest successes in the past year, Wande Coal missed out on the honours, and there wasn’t too much Nigerian domination this year. Ghana’s only representative, Sarkodie lost the Best Anglophone nod to Daddy Owen. However the Ghanaian rapper got the chance to shine in a mash up with Chuck D of Public Enemy fame and Nigerian female rap newcomer, Mo Cheddah. However the big winners on the night were Fally Ipupa winning Best Video and Best Francophone; and 2face winning Best Male and Best Artist.
