Got Zulu? JuxtaPower Says Yes!
JuxtaPower is a New York city based production of song and dance founded by both the artistic director and choreographer Sduduzo Ka-Mbili. JuxtaPower has been an important figure in promoting South Africa’s rich and diverse heritage of its country through theatrical expressions. They have traveled to multiple cities throughout the USA mesmerizing audiences with the showcasing of Zulu (warrior dance), ballet (now known as Zullet), gumboot dance (gold miners rhythmic movement) and adding a touch of the
American dance stepping.
This mind blowing, crowd pleasing production has graced multiple stages and recently they were the main opening act at The Black Ball, one of the most international acknowledged events in the fight against AIDS. They opened up the show for the one and only Alicia keys who was the musical director. Bono from U2 was also honored for his life changing work for those affected by AIDS.
For JuxtaPower, this is history in the making. It all began with a dream that is now redefining the way the African theatrical and the cultural exchange is being viewed by American society.
We caught up with the main man behind the birthing process of JuxtaPower and he walked us through the journey.
Jamati: Mr Ka-Mbili hope all is well and thanks for speaking with Jamati Online.
You are welcome.
Jamati: I understand that you are the man behind the birthing process of JuxtaPower. Please share with us how important it was for you to create such a theatrical cultural group.
Firstly it was a crucial decision for me because I had to give up a lot for a dream whose future was unknown but because of my love and the overflowing belief I had and still have for JuxtaPower, it was all worth it. It was also important for me to create such a group because I wanted to represent where I come from, my people and pave the way for the merely existing theatrical cultural stage production in the USA.
Jamati: How many members does the group have and what does each individual bring to the group? » Read more…
