The 27th Annual Sundance Film Festival
The Annual Sundance Film Festival ran from January 17-27, 2008 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. The 11- day event featured public film screenings and parties for filmmakers at the various venues. It was organized by the Sundance Institute, founded by actor Robert Redford in 1981, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent film artists and audiences. According to Redford, “this year filmmakers are putting personal focus on issues relating to the world we live in rather than addressing them on a macro-political level.”
There were a total of 121 feature-length films selected including 87 world premieres, 14 from North America, 12 U.S premieres representing 25 countries. These films were selected from 3624 submissions. The vast number of films selected were grouped into four major competition categories: Documentary Competition, Dramatic Competition, World Documentary Competition and World Cinema Dramatic Competition. With such a diverse selection, let’s see how Africa is represented at this premier showcase for the best new films by American and International independent filmmakers. » Read more…
David Oyelowo Inspires in ‘A Raisin in the Sun’
Talk about Africans being everywhere. I had the chance to watch the remake of the Tony award-winning play, A Raisin in the Sun, with Sean P. Diddy Combs, Sanaa Lathan, Phylisha Rashad, and Bill Nunn. Imagine my surprise when an African brother showed up with words of inspiration for Sanaa Lathan’s character. Turns out it is a very talented actor, David Oyelowo, who plays the character, Asagai. David made history in 2000 by becoming the first black actor to portray an English monarch, Henry VI, for the Royal Shakespeare Company. This performance earned him the Ian Charleson Award in 2001. Well, versatile Chiwetel is at it again! He won an award in the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards for Best Supporting Male , for his role in the movie, Talk to Me. The Independent Spirit Awards were founded to recognize indpendent film producers and independent films. Their idea originally was to make a film about West Africans living in New York to take back to Ouagadougou for FESPACO. Many lovers of African films have decried the decline in good Ghanaian films over the years. The Ghanaian film industry took an early lead role in film making within West Africa by producing several acclaimed African movies such as “Heritage Africa” and “Love Brewed in African Pot”. However, it has degenerated into a mediocre industry compared to Nigeria’s Nollywood in recent times. There have been various attempts at reviving Ghana’s film industry and if the new film written, produced and directed by Shirley Frimpong Manso is anything to go by, then certainly there is a future for good African movies from Ghana. » Read more…
Keeping Up With Dentaa
Vivian “Dentaa” Boateng is the host of OBE TV’s hit multi-segmented entertainment programme, “The Dentaa Show”. She was born in Juasu in Ghana but moved with her family to the UK at the age of 5. She soon developed interests in singing, acting and dancing. Her charisma and confidence during school plays and talent shows developed her passion and charted the path to her current career. Dentaa obtained her GCSE qualifications at the Walthamstow School for Girls and her A Levels in Media Studies, Sociology and Performing Arts at the Leyton Sixth form College. She also has a degree in paediatric nursing from the Buckinghamshire University.
