Chasing the ghosts in ‘ A Sting in a Tale’
Fast growing Ghanaian film writer/producer/director Shirley Frimpong-Manso decided to include the most glamorous ghosts yet out of Africa in her much anticipated fourth production, ‘A Sting In A Tale’. And for me, this very much represented the general feel-good theme of the movie; it is one for laughs and not taking life too seriously.

Any individual who has studied South African history can positively state that Rugby has been, and still is, a very important element of the South African journey. It has been more than century but I find it very hard for any soul to forget the major sport event that united South African people as whole thanks to the then newly elected and first black president, Nelson Mandela, and the then South African Rugby Captain, Francois Pienaar, played in the movie by Matt Damon.

As I watched and enjoyed the new movie written, directed and co-produced by Hollywood documentary film maker, Leila Djansi, it was the element of good storytelling that made the film stand out for me the most. ‘I Sing of a Well’ is the first installment in the trilogy, ‘Legion of Slaves’ which tells the story of slave trade triggered by the director’s experience at a slave site in her village in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Surrogates – Living a Second Life
Boris Kodjoe is an FBI agent in the sci-fi thriller, Surrogates, which is based on a Robert Venditti/ Brett Weldele book. He investigates a mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves – fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles – enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes.
Punctured Hope: Cinema and Consciousness
Although considered a crime against humanity, slavery is still a reality that comes in different forms around the world. With Punctured Hope: A Story About Trokosi and the Young Girls’ Slavery in Today’s West Africa presented in Montreal at the Festival des Films du Monde, the director Bruno Pischiutta exposes a little-known tradition dating back over 300 years.

Teza – A Haile Gerima Film
Teza is yet another gem that has been released by Haile Gerima (you might remember him as the director of Sankofa). The story is one of idealistic dreams dashed by reality.

FILM REVIEW: Jackson 5 In Africa
This past week, I had the great pleasure of checking out a rare gem of a film at Harlem’s National Black Theater. ImageNation, the organization responsible for putting together the screening and Q&A, is a Harlem-based media arts organization.
FILM: PARIAH
Alike (Adepero Oduye) is a teenager, who one could say has three strikes against her by being 1) a female, 2) Black and 3) a lesbian. Shot in New York City, Pariah explores what it means to juggle multiple identities and the toll that can take. Alike juggles these identities in order to gain acceptance from her family and friends but, at some point, this becomes too much. As Alike finds, many of the gender constructs that society imposes apply not only to relationships involving men and women, but also same gender relationships.

Pariah has screened at over 40 locations, including the Sundance Film Festival and the Pan African Film Festival. Currently, the film is a semi-finalist in the Netflix Find Your Voice Film Contest. To cast your vote for Pariah, click here. » Read more…
