Viva Riva – An award-winning film from the Congo
‘Viva Riva‘ is a raw look at modern Kinshasa, showing the sides we know, and the ones we might not be so aware of. Riva (Patsha Bay) is a young man who has come back to town after being away for 10 years. He is glad to be back and eager to spend the money that he has in his pocket. Unfortunately the money belongs to his old boss in Angola who is in active pursuit of him. He goes to the club and is enamored by Nora (Manie Malone), the kept woman of a local gangster.
Determined to have her, he throws caution to the wind and pursues her. His former boss is on his tail, leaving a trail of bodies and mayhem behind him. Nora’s boyfriend is also after Riva, determined to defend his honor. Riva’s night starts to look more like a nightmare as he deals with all the people trying to find him.

Johnny Mad Dog – from child to child soldier
‘ Johnny Mad Dog‘ is a film based on a book written by a Congolese writer, Emmanuel Dongala. He draws on his experience in the Congolese crisis to tell the story about the forceful conscription of teenage boys and girls into the army as child soldiers. Director Jean-Stephene Sauvaire and assistant director, Samuel T. Sherman, adapted the story to film with Mathieu Kassovitz as the producer.

The First Grader – An inspiring story about a man’s quest for education
With all the shows that seem to glorify skipping school and playing the truant, it is heartening to see a film that celebrates a man’s quest to go to school. In a small, remote mountain top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge (played by veteran actor Oliver Litondo), an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties, who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied – even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six-year-olds.

‘Taharuki’ Brings Suspense to the NY African Film Festival
Set in Kenya amidst 2007-2008 post-election violence, ‘Taharuki’ screened earlier this month at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater as part the 2011 New York African Film Festival, a festival which bills itself as a “celebration of African arts and culture.”

Imani – A moving look at three separate lives
Imani is the story of three different people who are having to make decisions that are affected by their past and will affect their future. Directed by Caroline Kamya, it takes an in-depth look at the issues that face the three characters and the factors that influence their life decisions. Contemporary music and local/traditional music are interwoven, forming a fitting backdrop for the characters’ experiences. The story is written by Agnes Kamya who is a social anthropologist.

Inale – An African musical fairytale
Inale is an African fairytale set to music. Produced by Jeta Amata, it tells the story of Inale, the beautiful daughter of the great King Oche, of the Idoma people in Idomaland, Nigeria. According to tradition, her beloved Odeh must win the wrestling tournament to win her hand in marriage. A stranger appears, who challenges not only the tradition of the village but the strength of Odeh and Inale’s true love. The story of how Odeh works to win his love’s hand-in-marriage back unfolds in this well-filmed movie.
