Malawi’s Top Musicians Come Face to Face

Malawian top  song stars will come face to face in Lilongwe on Sunday as Malawi’s top arts group, Words Art and Pictures (WAPi), supports the launch of ‘Umayitha’ (you know how to do it), by Biriwiri, one of the rising Malawian hip hop groups.

According to event promoter, Qabaniso Malewezi,  the Lilongwe Show that will be backed by Mizati band, will be a follow-up show of the successful launch in Blantyre some few weeks ago. » Read more…

Miss Africa In China Pageant

Vicky Michael is a computer science student at the University of Science and Technology who also happens to be a model.  She was discovered her first year in China by a gentleman who approached her to ask if she had modeled before.  Although she was apprehensive initially, she agreed to model and found that she was quite successful at it.

She is currently a part-time model, and is looking at the Miss Africa In China Pageant to help further her career AND make a difference for others.The Miss Africa In China Pageant’s aim is to have a regular, crowd-pulling, fund-raising, annual event selling Africa’s image in China and serving as a cultural link between Africans in China and Chinese friends.  It also provides a venue for Africans in China to showcase their talents. » Read more…

Jennifer Victoria Koranteng, a 22 year old Psychology Major graduate of the University of Ghana, has been selected as Miss Universe Ghana 2009 in a closed-pageant held at the La Palm Royal Hotel in Accra. The beautiful and intelligent young lady will represent Ghana at the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant to be held in the beautiful Paradise Island in the Bahamas, on August 23 2009.

Beenie Man Set to Perform in East Africa

Beenie Man is going to be performing in East Africa in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, and Kampala, Uganda.  Unfortunately for the folks in Kenya, no shows are scheduled.   His performance in Uganda is slated for June 30 2009.

Beenie Man Hemdee Kiwanuka, the CEO of No-End Entertainment is the person instrumental in bringing Beenie Man to East Africa.  Although no shows have been scheduled for Kenya, there is still a possibility that he can perform in Kenya, if a Kenyan promoter would be interested in partnering with Kiwanuka. » Read more…

The 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival brought out some great talent including Jean-Marie Teno, the Cameroonian director who was screening his film, Sacred Places.  Jonathan Amayo from Mode-HQ was on hand to answer technical questions during the Tech Talk segment of the festival.  TV personality, Sal Masekela showed his support for musician Bill Withers during his performance with his wife, Kori.

Nollywood is making its mark in Hollywood with movies highlighting the making of Nollywood movies, and programs that celebrate the industry. Samir Malla, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Ben Addelman were in a photoshoot for Nollywood Babylon at the Sundance. » Read more…

Nollywood stakes its claim in Hollywood

Actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim was joined by Hollywood Celebrities for the “4th Annual Nollywood Convention’s VIP Banquet”.  African actors Caroine Chikezie, Amanda Annan, Raz Adoti joined Hakeem to support this red carpet event for one of the biggest film industries in the world.

Attendees enjoyed Nigerian delicacies, a crowd stopping perfomance by soul singer “Sammie Jay”, Nollywood Films which were followed by Nigerian music.  Also enjoying the evening were Alice Amter (The Big Bang Theory), Treva Etienne (Terminator Salvation), Ed Gale (Howard The Duck) and Julio Hanson (Angels and Demonds).
The banquet was a culmination of a 3-day Nollywood Convention at the Palomar Hotel in Westwood to raise awareness of the Nollywood industry to Hollywood. The Nollywood Foundation’s president, Professor Sylvester Ogbechie, shared that the Nigerian film industry has grown rapidly to become one of the largest film producing industries in the world. » Read more…

Famous Ghanaian ethnomusicologist and composer, Joseph Hanson Kwabena Nketia’s music will come alive in New York City on June 26 at the Poet’s Den Theatre, when the NIA Theatrical Productions and Sankusem Foundation present a must-see celebration of his music.

ARISE Africa Fashion Week

The Arise Africa Fashion Week went on from June 12 2009 to June 20, 2009 with a grand prize winner getting a chance to showcase their designs in New York’s Fashion Week.  This was a great opportunity for the budding designers to get their work showcased on one of the most prestigious catwalks in the world.

The designers that participated came from South Africa, Madagascar, Nigeria, Uganda,  Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Guinea, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Angola, Ivory Coast, Namibia, Martinique, Mozambique, Egypt, Botswana and Morocco.  This is probably the most eclectic fashion show that the world has ever seen with a sampling of some of the best Afronista couture one could hope to find anywhere. » Read more…

Estelle and Busta Rhymes shot a video for “World Go Round” in New York….hmm….I think we should start to call this segment Estelle watch.  She is everywhere.  Lemar took some time out from fatherhood to take in a premiere movie–”Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.  Ozwald Boateng was at the same premiere with his children (they are adorable).

King Sunny Ade  was one of the feature artists at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and he also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival.  Jamie Foxx and Prince Ade Bamiro were also at the jazz festival celebrating the great music. » Read more…
