Seun Kuti at Summerstage

Written by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | August 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Fiery. Commanding. Omnipresent–On stage that is. Seun Kuti, the heir apparent to Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s throne strutted his stuff this summer in NYC’s Central Park at the prestigious Summerstage 2008. His slim-flitting pants, receding hairline, physique, and two-fisted salute evoked memories of his father, as did the two dancers on stage. Their rhythmical movements drew constant “ooohs” and “aaahhhhs” from the large crowd on hand, and Kuti performed “Oil,” “Don’t Bring That Sh*t,” and “Many Things,”–the title of his debut album–amongst others while the tunes from his sax and the beautiful sunset complemented each other.

Keba Armand Konte

Written by Mary Nwosuocha | August 24, 2008 | Leave a Comment

konte-0207.jpgWith a name meaning “Father Storyteller”, Keba Armand Konte has certainly made it his life work to tell the stories of some of the most important moments and influential people in recent history through his incredibly deep photo montages. Using wood and other materials on which to transpose photographic images, Konte’s works do not only depict great moments in history. These moments are displayed atop a piece of the history itself. Konte utilizes this technique in one of his recent pieces “NOLA’s Ark: Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?” in which he set transparent images of the devastation of Katrina atop pieces of rubble left behind in the storm, creating a material memory.

ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | August 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC was a great affair. With appearances by Youssou N’dour, John Legend, and Jay-Z, and the wonderful fashions by Deola Sagoe, Momo, and Chris Aire, it was a night to remember.

The show started about 45 minutes late due to some technical difficulties. Emcees Washington Post columnist and Associate Editor, Eugene Robinson, and newscaster Paula Zahn, kept the flow going between performances. My only peeve was that, although this was called Thisday Africa Rising Festival, the emphasis was on Jay-Z and John Legend. I thought the idea was to present the talent that is rampant in Africa. I was surprised to note that the people seated around me (press, no less), were unaware of the fame and respect the African performers on the roster command. It appears that Eugene Robinson and Paula Zahn weren’t completely aware either. I wasn’t the only one who thought so. » Read more…

Interview by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | July 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Every year, usually during summer, we stumble upon hidden jewels in parks and various open places across the globe. Call them what you will: Concerts, musical jamborees, celebrations of humanity. This year is no different as a surfeit of African artistes and designers converge on Minneapolis, Minnesota in a few weeks to commemorate the joy and uniqueness of being African. Under the stewardship of Nathan S. White, Afrifest has grown from strength to strength, and in recognition of such, Jamati cornered the 33-year-old Liberian to help explain Afrifest’s growing popularity.
