First Annual East African Music Awards highlight East African genres and talent
The first annual East Africa Music Awards (EMAs) was created to celebrate the different genres of music of the East African region, and reward homegrown talent. The genres that will be recognized include: Rhumba, Contemporary Gospel, Hip Hop, and Taarab, among many others. The ceremony celebrates music from the entire East African region: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sauti za Busara calls for artists
Calling all African musicians, African music films and festival artists from anywhere in the world. The selection committee meets during August to program the line up for Sauti za Busara 2012. For consideration, with your application they need one or two recent recordings (CD or DVD), photos and other information. Apply online anytime before 31 July 2011.
Nia Long and Ime Udoka expecting a child
Well, Nia Long has been telling people that she is pregnant and rumors were flying about who the father was. In a statement to People Magazine, she revealed that the father of the child is NBA basketball player, Ime Udoka.
“This is the most exciting time in our lives. Words can’t explain how thrilled we are by the new addition to our family. We feel truly blessed and appreciate all the well wishes and prayers.”

Kenyan and South African Photographers win prestigious Photoafrica awards in Spain
June 12th, Tarifa, Spain – Photographers from South Africa and Kenya won prestigious awards at fourth Photoafrica contest, which took place within 8th African Film Festival of Tarifa. The first place award, endowed with €1,500, went to Jessica MacLeod from South Africa for her photograph titled “You see a shack, I see my house”. The second place award, endowed with €1,000, went to James Muriuki from Kenya for the photograph titled “44”. Third place, endowed with €500, went to Mimi Cherono from Kenya with the photograph titled “Khusi and the Giraffes”.
“It was incredibly difficult to decide about winners, as the fourth edition of Photoafrica experienced a record number of over 400 entries and once again proved the unique potential and quality of African photographers”, says Pablo Juliá, chairman of the jury and director of the Andalusian Center Of Photography.

Tunji Kasim – A versatile actor brings depth to ‘American Trade’
Tunji Kasim is one of those rare actors that sees a meteoric rise, not because he is related to someone famous or because he pulled the right strings. His rise has come from sheer acting ability. A raw talent, he has proven himself in various roles from his first television part as Joe in the series ‘Nearly Famous‘, to the various parts in Shakespearean plays (although he once admitted not understanding everything the characters said).

Summer is finally here and that means lots of festivals, events, and opportunities for us to spot our favorite African celebs. Here are a few that were seen about town.
Fally Ipupa confirmed for Sawa Sawa Festival in Kenya
The Sawa Sawa week-end concerts will be staged at the Carnivore Grounds on Saturday, May 28 at 6:30pm – May 29 at 6:30pm. Sawa Sawa will feature the ‘main’ concert stage, a (cultural) vending area, food and beverage area, an info market and child activities. The lineup and programming will be (as much as possible) focused on female talent and will be done in such a way that it will cut across audiences of different communities, age, gender, economies and cultures. Saturday evening’s program will be geared towards the youth while the Sunday program will focus on families.

Anthony David draws huge crowd in Nairobi concert
American singer and songwriter Anthony David performed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, recently at the National Park in a concert dubbed ‘The Lounge Unplugged’. Known for his hit ‘Words‘, featuring India Arie, he wowed the crowd with his songs, including some from his fourth album, ‘As Above, So Below‘. One of the singers he collaborates with is his cousin, Shawn Stockman, from the group Boys II Men.
