Akon Sends Condolences to Dolla’s family

Dolla, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, was shot and killed while waiting in the valet area of the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles on May 18.  The alleged shooter was apprehended at the airport later that day.

The Sierra Leonean community in The Gambia celebrates its 48th Independence Anniversary

The week-long celebrations started with a Mystical night which showcased the traditional mystical performance by the famous group commonly known as the Sembeh Cultural Group, currently based in The Gambia.  Stick DancerThis group has always been part of the Sierra Leone International Cultural Dance Troop, which won the International Cultural Festival that is always organized by President Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh of the Republic of The Gambia, in his traditional home town of Kanilai. The Sierra Leone International Cultural Dance Troop had won the mystical power performance in this festival twice consecutively (2007 and 2008 respectively).

On the 22nd April, the Mystical power night performance was held at the High Point ‘Ol Skool’ in Kololi Tavern, which was organized by ‘All Walks Of Life” (AWOL-The Gambia), a cross-section of Sierra Leone which represented different facets of the Sierra Leonean Community presently residing in The Gambia. The MC of the occasion, Mohammed Haddy Gabisi gave a brief breakdown of the weeklong events. » Read more…

Akon helped Radio 1 celebrate their big weekend.   Alek Wek was at a  show titled “The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion”, hosted by the Costume Institute Gala. 

Charlize Theron was spotted at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Annual National Tribute Dinner. Amobi Okoye was spotted at the Kentucky Derby with Tom and Donna Joyner.  Interested in possibly looking fly, Kenna helped launch Carrera’s new line of sunglasses. » Read more…

Ida Ljungqvist Now Playboy Playmate of the Year

Ida Ljungqvist, the Tanzanian playmate for March 2009 was named Playboy Playmate of the Year by Hugh Hefner.  She was discovered at a Bebe clothing boutique in Beverly Hills by 2007 Playmate of the Year Sara Jean Underwood.  She made history as the magazine’s 50th woman to hold the title, and the first African to do so.  She is tri-lingual (English, Swedish, and Swahili), and has a degree in fashion design and marketing.

Under The Stars–Fashion For Peace

Capetown South Africa was treated to a wonderful performance by Linton Kwesi Johnson, a poet and musician.  Selfridges celebrated its 100th birthday and brought out the stars including actress Tolula Adeyemi.

There are many celebrities that have shown up at the Tribeca Film Festival to celebrate film.  Others were busy entertaining in their different fields, around the world.

Seal brought the house down at Radio City Music Hall in his inimitable style.  Suzanne ‘Africa’ Engo took some time out to catch a movie screening, while Mel B. lent her celebrity status to the Invisible Children organization to draw attention to the abduction of children in Uganda to force into the army. Warner Brothers Fights HIV/AIDS

There is a great project that is being used in Kenya to combat the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus.  The project, called the HIV Free Generation, is a game that children can play to learn how to implement positive behaviors and educate on HIV/AIDS.
