Keba Armand Konte
With a name meaning “Father Storyteller”, Keba Armand Konte has certainly made it his life work to tell the stories of some of the most important moments and influential people in recent history through his incredibly deep photo montages. Using wood and other materials on which to transpose photographic images, Konte’s works do not only depict great moments in history. These moments are displayed atop a piece of the history itself. Konte utilizes this technique in one of his recent pieces “NOLA’s Ark: Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?” in which he set transparent images of the devastation of Katrina atop pieces of rubble left behind in the storm, creating a material memory.
Liberia is being done proud
Well, well…..it seems that the West Africans are stepping up to the plate and showing us how it is done. Two of them, both from Liberia, have achieved, or are achieving great things on a large scale so we thought we would highlight it for our readers.
Angela Asare – Ms. Universe Ghana 2006
There are times that we try to highlight the current beauties but, occasionally, it is worth looking back and highlighting some memorable people. Angela Asare is one such person. This gorgeous lady was the tallest contestant in the 2006 Ms. Universe Ghana and subsequently won it. Looking at her pictures, we can see why.
She has since been the Face of Runway Africa and has worked with the Keep A Child Alive campaign to raise AIDS awareness.

Akon makes Forbes’ Hip Hop Cash King
Akon is having a good year! He made the Forbes list for hip hop’s 20 biggest earners in 2008, a list that celebrates the business savvy of the hip hop moguls. Akon came in at number 12 and tied with Eminem and Common at $12 million dollars.
50 Cent dethroned Jay-Z who was last year’s winner. P-Diddy was third, the same position he held last year. Tupac made the list post-humously, pulling in $15 million dollars. Now that is truly genius!
Howsoon Cham – DC’s Celebrity Chef
Gambian-born Howsoon Cham is not one to back off a challenge. When he purchased Red Ginger in Georgetown, Washington DC, he had all the staff throw out all the food into trash cans, brought in a whole new menu and food items, and did this all on a day when they were expecting a party of thirty. The staff almost had a stroke! He introduced a Caribbean/Latin American menu that has become very popular in the area.

South African Radio (SARFM) FM – The Heart Beat Of Africa In New York City
As a foreigner I know how it feels like to turn from one radio station to another in the hope of hearing something that is a reminder of one’s mother land–whether it be a song in an African language, issues about Africans, or even hearing an African radio personality on the air. Well I’m glad to share with you that I have found a New York City-based internet radio station that is all about Africa, called the SARFM radio station.
This radio station has been around for about 3 years now, thanks to Chaka Ngwenya, the CEO and Founder. Originally from Zimbabwe, and a major radio icon there, he came to the USA with the intention of starting an African radio station. Although the journey has not been easy, Mr. Ngwenya assures us that it has all been worth it. Today SARFM radio reaches millions of Africans and people in the diaspora. » Read more…

ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC
The ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC was a great affair. With appearances by Youssou N’dour, John Legend, and Jay-Z, and the wonderful fashions by Deola Sagoe, Momo, and Chris Aire, it was a night to remember.
The show started about 45 minutes late due to some technical difficulties. Emcees Washington Post columnist and Associate Editor, Eugene Robinson, and newscaster Paula Zahn, kept the flow going between performances. My only peeve was that, although this was called Thisday Africa Rising Festival, the emphasis was on Jay-Z and John Legend. I thought the idea was to present the talent that is rampant in Africa. I was surprised to note that the people seated around me (press, no less), were unaware of the fame and respect the African performers on the roster command. It appears that Eugene Robinson and Paula Zahn weren’t completely aware either. I wasn’t the only one who thought so. » Read more…
