ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC
The ThisDay Africa Rising Festival in Washington DC was a great affair. With appearances by Youssou N’dour, John Legend, and Jay-Z, and the wonderful fashions by Deola Sagoe, Momo, and Chris Aire, it was a night to remember.
The show started about 45 minutes late due to some technical difficulties. Emcees Washington Post columnist and Associate Editor, Eugene Robinson, and newscaster Paula Zahn, kept the flow going between performances. My only peeve was that, although this was called Thisday Africa Rising Festival, the emphasis was on Jay-Z and John Legend. I thought the idea was to present the talent that is rampant in Africa. I was surprised to note that the people seated around me (press, no less), were unaware of the fame and respect the African performers on the roster command. Accra once again rocked to the wit and humour of some of the best comedians Africa has to offer at the Night of 1006 Laughs. Top Nigerian comedians like Okey Bakassi, Lepascious Bose, Gordons and Julius D’Genius Agwu were at the Ghana National Theatre on Saturday August 2 to crack ribs and ease tension. » Read more…
Soul:ID Showcased in Elle Magazine in Belgium
Elle Magazine, Belgium, recently showcased the talented Soul:ID to find out what they are up to. In the interview and photo shoot, they talked about their trip to Rwanda, and their reception in New York. Made up of 4 members from 3 African countries and one European country, their recent invitation to a radio station to be the feature of a show that famed DJ OhSoKool put together to prove that you can find good soul music outside the US, helped launch them further forward.
‘Gala Africa’ A Hit in China
‘Gala Africa‘ was a celebration of African fashion, art, and music. Put together by Li Yayuan, the choreographer of the China Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble, the show had more than 10 African musical troupes, and included the dance, ‘Black is Beautiful’ and ‘On the Other Side of the Cloud‘, performed by the National Dance Company of Cameroon. » Read more…
Afrifest: A Celebration of Africa and her People
Every year, usually during summer, we stumble upon hidden jewels in parks and various open places across the globe. Call them what you will: Concerts, musical jamborees, celebrations of humanity. This year is no different as a surfeit of African artistes and designers converge on Minneapolis, Minnesota in a few weeks to commemorate the joy and uniqueness of being African. Under the stewardship of Nathan S. White, Afrifest has grown from strength to strength, and in recognition of such, Jamati cornered the 33-year-old Liberian to help explain Afrifest’s growing popularity.

So Do You Think She Can Dance?
20 year old Nigerian native Comfort Fedoko is one of the first Africans to make it to the reality show “So You Think You Can Dance“, after being eliminated then called back to replace fellow dancer King after a serious injury. Fedoke who admitted to not having as much dancing experience as the other contestants vowed to give it her all. Critics predict that her appearance on the show won’t last for long due to her lack of dancing history.

Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebration might have began early in London but today is actually the legend’s official birthday. At 90 year’s old it actually makes sense that there is only so little wishes that one can ask for themselves but a lot they can wish upon the world. For his birthday wish when asked Mandela said that his only desire is for people to come together and keep alive his Nelson Mandela Foundation, Nelson Mandela Children’ s Fund, and the Mandela Rhodes Foundation. » Read more…

ThisDay’s Africa Rising Festival is a showcase of some of the best in Africa. Several notable artists showed up to perform at this growing annual festival including Chris Brown, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Oluchi, Ozwald Boateng, Chris Aire, Faze, and Naomi Campbell.
