What is an African?
CNN is currently inspiring dialogue about what makes someone an African-American as opposed to an African, African-American. There has been debate amongst Africans about what an African is. Is it someone who is born in Africa, or can someone who is born to African parents in the diaspora, but never raised in Africa, still claim that they are African?
Africans define themselves by who their parents are for the most part, although there are some who feel that if they are born in the diaspora, they are no longer African, just born to African parents. Even more hotly contested, are the people who have one African parent. Some claim that if they are not full-blooded Africans, they are not worthy of the title. The latest Playboy playmate, Ida Ljungqvist, is half Tanzanian and half Swedish and was born and raised, for a while, in Tanzania, yet people claim that she isn’t African. Why must anyone have to choose a side of their heritage? And if they don’t deny it, why deny it of them? White and Asian Africans also find that they are constantly called upon to prove that they are African. Weekend Buzz
We haven’t heard anything about Estelle for a while. She has been a little under the weather. Maybe she was still shaken up by the fact that she was in the same area where Dolla got shot. Anyway, she is none the worse for wear, and busy marketing herself in true Estelle style. She performed at the Museum of Modern Art, helped H&M highlight Fashion Against AIDS, and performed at the Grammy Celebration Concert Tour. Yup, she’s back!
Rapper, Wale, performed at the Sway and .Tel Pre Movie Awards Celebration and Korto Momolu helped aspiring designers realize their dreams at the 1st Annual African Fashion Designer’s Competiton. Alek Wek looked fabulous in yellow but was sporting an orange cast at the 2009 Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Seal was in Turkey at the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya, Turkey to perform at the grand opening. Overall, it was not too hectic a weekend. Let’s see what next weekend brings.

Natalie Okri is a 10-year-old girl with a dream that may just be realized. At only 10, she already has Simon Cowell impressed with her ability to perform (and we all know how hard it can be to impress Simon).

Kirette Couture, a clothing line by Cameroonian designers Anrette Ngafor and Kibonen Nfi will be showcasing their outfits, including the summer 2009 collection on Wednesday June 3rd.
Tinsel season 2 looking even more intriguing
After captivating viewers across Africa with the first season of the intriguing and well-crafted Nigerian-Ghanaian star-studded production, M-NET is gearing up for the launch of season two of the glamourous soap opera TINSEL. With season one running 65 episodes and screening twice a week on M-Net, season two will offer even more to viewers. Now running an impressive 156 episodes, TINSEL will be screened three times a week, every Monday to Wednesday at 21.00 CAT from June 1.
Renee Wilson to Participate in Sawa Sawa Festival
The annual Sawa Sawa Festival will take place from May 29 to 31. On Friday 29, Renee Wilson will perform at the Sarakasi Dome alongside Omar Arreola, a Mexican musician based in California and Damien Horne during the VIP opening event.
Ethiopian is Germany’s Next Top Model.
On May 20th 2009, 19 year old Ethiopian, Sara Nuru, was announced the winner of the wildly successful reality show that started in America and has now spread to Germany and Canada. The East African beauty beat 21,000 other applicants who auditioned for the show and was named winner at the end of the show that ran for three months.
Kenya Celebrates a Winner at the International Young Music Entrepreneur Awards 2009
Big Up to Big Kev (Kevin Ombajo), Director of Trueblaq Group, for taking home the award for second place in the International Young Music Entrepreneur (IYME) Awards 2009.
Akon’s hectic lineup
Akon is scheduled to perform live in Doha, Qatar tonight at the Doha Intercontinental Hotel to an audience of between 6000-10,000. This will be his first performance in the region.
