The nominations were announced on February 26, and Sarkodie, touted as the fastest rapper led the pack with 8 nominations including artist of the year and song of the year. Fellow hiplife artists Ayigbe Edem, 4X4, and Bradez had 6, 5 and 5 nominations respectively.

The well attended event that saw performances from the likes of Kwabena Kwabena, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Celestine Donkor, Ohemaa Mercy and Wutah ended up with the big reveal of nominees. The complete list of nominees is as follows:

Winners would be announced at the Ghana Music Awards ceremony slated for the Accra Conference Centre (Dome) on Saturday April 10. Other industry awards on the night would include: best music video, traditional artist of the year, instrumentalist of the year, MUSIGA merit award, producer of the year and the World Bank best music for development.

Jamati Online was privileged to be able to offer free downloads of two mixtapes with some of the best talent in Nigerian contemporary music today.  The second mixtape was especially well-received with many listeners noting that the talent that is rampant in Nigerian music can easily rival or surpass what we find in the diaspora today. Harrison “Harry Baba” Nwozo teamed up with famed Nigerian DJ, DJ Manixx (of he famous Nigerian DJ Coalition), to produce the Green October Mix tape series. They compiled a comprehensive selection of the best, chart topping, popular Nigerian Afro beat, Afro hip hop and dance music out of Nigeria. In addition, songs by up and coming underground Nigerian artists are also included in the mix tape series.

Selasi Duce

Selasi first discovered his love for music when he saw a band playing at church. As a self-taught musician, Selasi started playing the drums in the church band, then went on to play the keys, and finally became the sound engineer/ music director for the church.  At the age of 14, he produced his first album in Malawi as part of that country’s first gospel rap trio, Gospel Warlords. That was his first studio experience and the group gained some huge exposure making the album the first and hottest selling gospel rap album in that country. “I remember walking through the market and seeing a bootleg copy of my album (laughs out loud). That was a weird experience,” comments Selasi.

After graduating from college in Malawi he was presented with the opportunity to further his education in any place of his choice.  After looking at the album credits/ liner notes of all the artists he admired including Usher, Jermaine Dupree, Monica, and Outkast, among others, there was only one clear option.  In 1999 Selasi moved to the city of Atlanta. Upon his arrival he enrolled in college and studied International Business and juggled that with a job at a car wash during the day. By night, and with all of his spare time, he tirelessly worked at his craft looking for any opportunity to get his foot in the music industry’s door.

Finally Selasi had the breakthrough he worked so hard for and has since worked with different artists/ industry personnel such as Brian Jackson, Akon , Pimp C , Jagged Edge, Ying Yang Twins, Trey Songz, Keysha Cole, Rasheeda, Killa Mike, Devyne Stephens, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Petey Pablo, Boys in Da Hood, Bobby Valentino, Yung Joc among others and has gained the respect of the industry as the next big producer, artist, song-writer, and engineer.

With a sound that meshes his African roots with an American lifestyle, Selasi proves to be the epitome of balance on every song. In one swoop he can rap alongside Gucci Mane on club skewed tracks like “Way Over Here” and switch lanes into one-drop reggae songs like “Our Father” dedicated to his homeland. As founder of his own Rocksteady Music Group, Inc., Selasi possesses that rare talent of being able to craft fitting production for his lyrics.

Jamati Online caught up with The African Kid to find out about his journey into music, his works, inspirations and aspirations.

Jamati: How growing up like for you?

I was born in Accra and I grew up in Accra and Cape Coast.  I schooled in St Augustine College for about 3 years before going to St. Thomas Aquinas. I left Ghana to join my dad in Malawi in 1997 and then left for the states in 1999

Jamati: When and how did you get your breakthrough as a producer in the US?

Because I do more than just production including being an artist and a mix engineer I was always working with the artist in one way or another. I worked with Akon and from there I met someone who introduced me to Jagged Edge. I produced two songs on their album ‘Baby Makin Project’ called ‘Can’t Get Right’ and ‘Turn U On’ and engineered the whole album.  It was a snowball effect from there. I met Keysha at the Jagged Edge studio, she had come through to work with them and from there it just kept going on.

Jamati: What’s inspires your work?

As an artist/producer I pull inspiration from everyday life experiences, and it doesn’t even have to be my experiences. Inspiration might come from anywhere so I just lay the idea down, sometimes on my phone.

Jamati: Who are some of your influences?

As an artist it’s the likes of Bob Marley, Musical Youth, UB 40 and others.  As a producer Quincy Jones and Dr Dre have been very influential to me.

Jamati: What makes your works stand out from the others?

I put my heart into every piece that I create, and, unlike most producers because I’m a mix engineer (mixing songs like “Stanky Legg” etc) I’m able to personally perfect every single detail on a record, getting it exactly the way I want it to sound.  I do not have a signature tune or beat per say because music comes from within so every musical creation captures a moment in time.

Jamati: As a musician, what kind of music do you do?

My music is a hybrid, a mixture of different rhythms and sounds that have influenced me over the years, example Highlife, Kwasa Kwasa, reggae, Hip hop, pop etc

Jamati: Do you have any singles out already?

I have two street singles out the now “Ghetto Girls” with Rasheeda and “Way Ova Here” with Gucci Mane which are currently available on iTunes. You can also check them out at my Myspace page.

Jamati: Are you currently working on any productions or projects?

Yes, I just finished mixing the whole Rasheeda album and I produced/was featured on a song on there called “Fire”. I produced a song on Ludacris’ artist’s Playaz Circle’s new album, Flight 360 called ‘Quit Flossing’ featuring Jagged Edge. Currently I’m in the studio finishing up the album for Kandi of The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Escape fame. I am also working on my own album which is going great!!

Jamati: What tools are we likely to find in your studio right now?

Apple G5, MPC 2000, Roland XP 60, Motif, Proteus, Korg Triton, Logic Pro, a Behringer mixer and Protools HD 3,and a Mac book pro.

Jamati: What is a routine day like for you?

Wake up bout 8:30am, go running and work out, jump in the shower, grab some breakfast and then get on the phone with my business partner and finally get in the studio around 3pm

Jamati:  If you had the chance to work with any artists dead or alive, who will it be and why?

Bob Marley. I love the purity/honesty in his songs; Plus, I love his creativity.

Jamati: As a Ghanaian/ African what is your assessment of our contemporary music?

The business side of the music has to be developed drastically. It will create a better reward system for the artist who would in turn have the finances to put out quality music. Africans need to set up a reward system for its artists, for example royalties from airplay (TV and Radio), movies, and commercials etc.

Jamati: Have you worked with any African acts?

Akon, though I would love to do a lot more.

Jamati: Have you ever pitched using African rhythms and beats for any of your clients in USA?

I have actually done so on a couple of tracks which the record labels haven’t put out yet.

Jamati: How connected are you to your Ghanaian roots?

I was in Ghana last month.  I love Ghanaian food and for me, It’s between fufu and some goat light soup and jollof rice. I still speak some Twi and Ga.

Jamati: What would you like to achieve in the future as an artist and producer?

My dream is to become a household name in the music industry as an artist/producer and an all-around musician, utilizing the gifts that God has given me. I believe, though, that I haven’t even scratched the surface yet of what God has in store for me.

Smalls

Although the rapper doesn’t have an official album yet he’s been extremely prolific on his 10 mix tapes all with an average of 14 tracks. He has also participated on two underground albums with a group of unknown artists during his school days as well as two live radio CDs which was essentially him and a group of artists rapping live on air for 2 hours. His mix tapes include: Smalls & Stretch, Gyname, Throwback, Flocation, Justice, The Briefing I, The Briefing II—special report, A.D.D (Afrikan. Dun. Did-It), Watch Out, Smalls Reloaded (best of pt 1), and Radio Cypha part I & II. The other albums are Black Eyce and Black Eyce B.T.T.B (back to the beginning).

Already drawing comparisons to New York hip hop maestro Jay-Z, due to similarities in style, Smalls draws a lot of influences from Jay-Z himself and other hip hop royalties. His music, music videos, and several updates are available mainly on his Myspace page. There will soon be an official website which will provide more of Smalls’ sounds, pictures and videos.

Jamati Online caught up with the talented rapper to find out more about his music, influences, inspirations and aspirations.

Jamati: What kind of music do you do?

I do hip hop infused with a lot of other musical influences to make a genuine sound. So, I would say hip hop infused with rock and a mixture of soul and African hotness. I rap about whatever is on my mind and whatever the beat makes me feel like.

Jamati: Which artists do you draw influences from?

The spectrum is too broad but [I will] name a few. My influences range from the melodious voices of Gladys Knight, Al Green, Luther Vandross and the Jackson 5 to Biggie Smalls, Beastie Boys, NWA, LL cool J, Jay-Z, Nas, Tupac, Lauryn Hill, Flip Mode Squad. Those are just the tip of the iceberg of artists that have made me evolve over time.

Jamati: One of your latest singles is ‘Jane’. What inspired it?

Jane in general is a song about addiction. Everyone has an addiction of some type whether it’s food, women, sex or drugs. I wouldn’t’ say that I am addicted to cannabis, though I am a user. However, I thought from my standpoint that I use cannabis as the subject because not only was it suitable from my standpoint, but for the theme of the song. I thought it would be a crazy idea to expose this type of addiction; this normal addiction disguised as if I was talking about a female. Since cannabis is also known as Jane or Mary Jane from a creative standpoint it was a hit to be so I did it.

Jamati: Are you in touch with Ghanaian roots?

I have been in contact since childhood, with my family and cousins writing letters to my brother before he came to the US in 1987. And since I finished school and made a little cash, I have been going every two years since 2003. So, I have been there a total of 2 times and I am ready to go this coming February for the anniversary of my uncle’s death in Kumasi. I know Adum, Kumasi fairly well and they have my CDs there. I took a whole bunch there and when I go there I stick out. I guess I look too good; that is what I like to think (laughs out loud).

Jamati: What is your impression of Ghanaian/African music from U.S.?

I am very optimistic about any new sound that is not the norm. However, African music from the U.S. to me is a gift and a curse. A gift where it ‘s a new sound that can further open the genre of music but at the same time I tend to see a lot of African musicians based in U.S. catering to just one crowd, the Africans. How do you expect to expand when you are not making yourself expandable? The only way to do that is not to just cater to one group but to cater to all as much as possible to get people on a massive wave to enjoy the sound. That is what is lacking on both aspects of African music whether it’s from U.S or Africa.

Jamati: Do you have any plans to promote your music in Ghana/Africa?

I have property in Kumasi so I figure that the best way for me to put my music out there is to establish a base. In my case, I have a overall plan of opening a studio to get work going on in Ghana but also to have an avenue of being able to make music in Africa with Africans.That to me is an important key for promotion at a foreign place.

Jamati: How do you think Africans would receive your music?

For the most part, the ones that understand music and are open minded, love it but there are some who just don’t get it and are quick to classify my sound as noise. It is one of those things where I just have to do my best to try and get as much ears open as much as possible. The more ears the more reception

Jamati: What do you to achieve with your music?

Everyone wants to live doing what they want to do and enjoy. My enjoyment is music and if I can live comfortably doing that, then that is what I am looking for.

Jamati: What are you currently working on?

Right now I am working on the ‘smallsjustnice’ website and getting ready to make some more tracks and hopefully make noise to the right ears to really get my sound out to a massive crowd. Doing what I do best, talk on beats.

Spek Won

Born Benjamin Nii Kpani Addy in the city of Toronto, he started writing lyrics as early as age 10 but started performing professionally at about the age of 19. His music which is influenced by a multiplicity of genres is often inspirational and real. He has completed work on his mix album, ‘Preemo Donna’ and is ready for launching on-line and on CD late November.

Spek Won is also a member and founder of a group of young talented Africans, mainly Ghanaians in Toronto, called Z-BOIZ (Zongo Boiz). The coalition consists of musicians, fashion designers, dancers, producers etc.

Jamati online caught up with the budding musician to find out more about his music, inspirations and aspirations.

Jamati: What kind of music do you do?

I make good music. I don’t like confining my music to just one genre, but if I had to, I’d say Hip Hop. My music is about reality, love, revolution, and my life in general.

Jamati: Who are some of the musicians that influence your music?

In the early 80’s I had older cousins that would play mixed hip hop cassette tapes of guys like A Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang, Nas, B.I.G, Snoop Doggy Dogg, etc, and vinyl records of guys like Kool Moe Dee, Rob Base, Krs One, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick etc. That was my introduction to hip hop music. Also my father would play a lot of Motown music like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson 5 as well. Those have to be some of the main influences on my music.

Jamati: How would you describe your upcoming album?

It has 10 solid tracks where I take you into my world and give you the Spek Won perspective on what Hip Hop music has been missing for a while now. I’ve also got a Bonus Track on there called “Hip Life” that I shot a music video for. The video and song narrate the life style of most of us young African entrepreneurs living here in Toronto. It will be available in Ghana early 2010. Ghana should have my music bumping before the Black Stars get it popping on the soccer field.

Jamati: As someone born and living in Toronto, what influenced the track ‘Hiplife’?

What I’m doing with this “Hip Life” single is I’m introducing hip life music to all those on this side of the world that don’t know about it. Hip life is known as a style of music, I’m taking it to that next level by letting the world know that it’s a lifestyle, a mind state, more than just music. If you were to come down to Toronto and witness the way the African youth here vibe out, you’ll see that we’ve created our own slang, or own fashion and our own trends by mixing our African heritage with the North American way of life. Last year I performed at a show with Reggie Rockstone ‘The Godfather’ and I asked him if he had any advice for me. He said… “There is Reggie Rockstone, and there is Spek Won. Just show the world hip life from your perspective”. I took in what he said and that’s where the inspiration for the single came from.

Jamati: What is your impression of Ghanaian music from Canada?

Ghanaian music is big out here in Canada. When I was growing up in here in Toronto the Ghanaian population here was quite small, but now the Ghanaian community here is huge, and it’s managed to fuse both Ghanaian culture and music with western culture. We love hip life and high life over here, and we appreciate the music that all of the artists there are making.

Jamati: Are you in touch with Ghana, and when was the last time you visited Ghana?

Yeah I stay in touch with my family back home in Ghana. I was there about 2 years ago for the African Cup of Nations, and I’ll be there next year for world cup. I say Black Stars are taking it this year.

Jamati: What are you currently working on?

Currently I’m working toward the release of my mix tape album “Preemo Donna”, so I’m quite busy with shows, and travelling here and there. Besides that I’ve been doing a lot of writing, and producing for my next solo effort. The album is going to be called “MG&R”. I’ll reveal what that stands for when the release date is closer. That album is due to drop in summer 2010, and I plan on bringing that whole movement to Ghana.

Jamati: What do you hope to achieve with your music?

My music has to teach and inspire otherwise there is really no point. I’m here to educate, uplift and mobilize the people, and make you dance to it at the same time. Music is a very powerful tool to be used wisely, and I’m doing just that. I want to promote my music in Ghana, big time! I’ve got a few connects, but wouldn’t mind having a few more. The industry out there is much different than it is here, so my team is taking time to figure out how to maneuver with promotion over there.

Jamati: How do you think Ghanaians would receive your music?

I think they’ll love it. I’ve been to a few clubs out there in Ghana, and I’ve listened to the radio. Ghana is ready for Spek Won 100%.

For some reason though, Akon and Wyclef stripped to their skivvies.  Guess it was all in good fun, but I wonder how many parents made their children turn off the television.  It is also a surprise that there was no uproar in the local media about it.   Kenya must be getting more permissive.

Ajuma Nasenyana was one of the presenters and the winners are all listed here.  Overall it was a great show in the vein of MTV’s entertainment style with a wonderful tribute to two great performers, Lucky Dube and Michael Jackson.  Let’s see what the 2010 awards bring.

Coptic in the Studio

The talented producer who relies heavily on hiphop melodies and drum beats has made beats for the likes of Notorious BIG, G-Dep, Jermaine Dupri, KRS-One, Black Rob, Mase, Memphis Bleek, Carl Thomas, and Ice Cube, and is currently working on a project that aims to bring hip hop to Africa. The Africa-meets-America hip hop album, featuring rappers from both sides of the world.

Coptic was born in Kumasi, but grew up in Accra and Awukugua mostly. His love affair with music started at an early age; according to his mom, he was making music from the time he was a baby, beating on his grandmother’s pots. But his earliest memory of making music was when he was in a local band based in Newtown, Accra. He played the base drum and some percussion instruments. Perhaps, this is responsible for his signature thumping drums and melodies in his beats now.

In January 1983 he left Ghana for the US at age 13 and that marked the beginning of what has become the success story of this pure musical genius today.  Jamati Online brings you the untold story of this African gem from his own mouth.

Jamati: What was your first production?

My first production sold was to Puff Daddy, this was before his first album came out, and when Biggie Smalls was still alive. It was supposed to be on Puff’s album and it was to feature Biggie Smalls. Well, I got paid for the track, Biggie died a few weeks later and I never heard that track again. My first actual released production was to Jermaine Dupri, for his ‘Life in 1472’ album. The song was “All That’s Gotta Go”, featuring Da Brat, and that album sold platinum plus.

Jamati: How did you make this breakthrough?

I hung out at Uptown Records a lot, which was Andre Harrell’s label. That was around the time that Puff was A&R for Andre and working with Mary J. Blige and others. My boy/business partner David Best worked in the mailroom for the record label, so that got me through the front door and a chance to see a functioning and successful record label in action. About a year later David introduced me to his junior high school friend, Harve Pierre. Harve is the current president of Bad Boy Worldwide, but back then Harve was Puff’’s A&R at his newly created label, Bad Boy Entertainment. With Harve’s early and later guidance, I was able to get in the right places.

Jamati: How did this lead to meeting the likes of Diddy, Jermain Dupri and others?

I worked on my craft for a few more years until Harve felt that my music was ready, at that point he passed my tape to my current manager, Anthony Hubbard, who then passed it on to Deric “D-dot” Angelette, who at this point was the hottest hip hop producer in America. Deric had produced the “Benjamins” and a whole lot of other hits for Bad Boy. He liked what he heard on the tape and it went from there. I worked as a producer for him, co-producing records for The Notorious Big, Puff, Jermaine Dupri, and others. At this point he had me, Kanye West and Charlemagne (Bronx) working as producers for him. This was good for us because it got us exposed to artists that we would normally not know.

Jamati: What’s inspires your works and who are your influences?

My beats are inspired by melody and drums.    I like hard Hip Hop drums; I always have that in my music. My influences include Bob Marley (I was fortunate to work with some of his kids in Miami) and Old School Hip Hop.

Jamati: Are you currently working on any productions or projects?

Yes, I am working with my artist Lil Goonie from Nashville, Tennessee. He has the official theme song to the Girls Gone Wild movement; he also has a few songs featured in their television show “The Hottest Girl in America”. I am also working with Ghana’s own Gibril Da African.

Jamati: What is your assessment of our contemporary Africa music?

I love the music coming out of Ghana, for example, but I believe the main problem for an African musician is proper compensation from people using their music. African radio and televisions stations need to pay artist royalties; this will have a positive effect on the movement.

Jamati: Have you work with any African acts?

Yes, I am working with Gibril Da African.  I also worked with Zimbabwe Legit, Wanlov The Kubolor, and Angelique Kidjo. I am working on an Africa-meets-America hip hop album, featuring rappers from both sides, maybe one day I will finish it.

Jamati:  Have you ever pitched using African rhythms and beats on the works of any of these big US acts and what was the response?

Well I have actually sold a couple of tracks with African influences, but for some reason or the other they were not released.

Jamati: Are you in touch with your Ghanaian roots?

I was in Ghana for Christmas 2007 and I had a great time. My favorite Ghanaian foods include yam with some Kontomire stew, or maybe some beans and fried plantains. I still speak okay Twi, but when I left Ghana, I spoke excellent Twi, Ga and the Akuapim language.  I would love to work with a lot of the Ghanaian musicians like Reggie and King Ayisoba, we just don’t have access to each other. As the front lady for the band, Shingai’s presence is powerful with the big hair, her choice of style, and the distinctive voice. This Zimbabwean started her musical journey at an early age as a way to escape from everything and, although her first intention was to be an actor, her musical passion overrode her passion for acting and, thanks to that she is now one of the “Noisettes” and their movement in the industry is unstoppable. The New York Post and The Rolling Stone Magazine love them and the reviews for they self titled album are nothing but positive.
