The 12th edition of the Ghana Music Awards (GMA) happened over the weekend with the usual pomp and pageantry that has characterized the award ceremony over the years. The top nominated artists couldn’t have more than two awards each although Cecelia Marfo, Kwabena Kwabena and Trigmatic each had at least 7 nominations.
Eska Mtungwazi a hidden gem in the music industry
One of the great things about this site is that we get to see incredible talent, often before a majority of the world is aware of it. One such talent is Eska Mtungwazi from Zimbabwe. Eska is a multi-talented singer with a soul/jazz/neo-soul vibe that appeals to a broad audience. She is also a composer, arranger and producer which gives her greater insight into the multiple pieces that help make a great song. Her live performances leave the audiences satisfied and determined to catch her the next time she is in town. Her almost throaty, yet smooth delivery harkens to a mix of Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, and Norah Jones. Her voice is powerful and her presence and delivery commanding as she works the stage delivering everything from African genres to jazzy rhythm and blues.

Salif Keita to perform in New York and DC
Salif Keita is scheduled to perform in New York on April 9, 2011 at the Apollo Theater and will also be at an afterparty with fellow Malian musician, Amkoullel. This is indeed a treat for those who are avid fans of Keita. Originally from Bamako, Mali, Salif Keita has been sharing African music with the Diaspora for over 20 years. Born an albino with a royal lineage (he is a direct descendant of Sundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire), he was cast out of his family (albinism is seen as cursed) and ended up a singer (frowned upon as this is a griot’s role and not one befitting a person of royal lineage). It is usually out of pain and hurt that some of the most poignant music is developed and we are not disappointed in Keita.
