Eric Sell a.k.a EeS – Judge For Yourself!

Written by Prudence Chauke | October 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Namibian born and raised Eric Sell’s African roots are unquestionable.  Because of his race and his choosen music genre, he always manages to cause a stir with people questioning his ability as an artist. I must admit when I first saw him I thought  to myself, “Okay, another hip-hop artist,” so I was startled my reaction would be to discover that this white boy was also a house and kwaito artist.

Not only has she been nominated for both the “Artist of the Year” and the “Best Female Act” at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards, but Asa was also nominated for the “Best African Act” at the 2008 MOBO Awards beside trailblazing artists like Estelle and Dizzee Rascal. Born in Paris but Nigerian-raised, Asa is a product of two Nigerian parents who, when she was only two, returned back to settle in the “New York City” of Nigeria–Lagos.Asa

As a child growing up with a music lover for a father, she listened to the likes of Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklen, Marvin Gaye, Lagbaja, and Ebenezer Obey. It was obviously time destined for her to answer to her musical call. Drawing inspiration from all the artists that she listened to growing up, Asa started connecting all the elements that make her the trailblazing artist she is.

P-Sqaure – The Unstoppable Duo!

Written by Prudence Chauke | October 17, 2008 | Leave a Comment

P-Square and AkonIt’s no secret that one of the biggest influential artists in the Naija entertainment industry right now is the electrifying duo, P-Square. Recently they have scooped numerous awards at the Channel O Spirit Of Africa Music Awards and been nominated for the best African act at the MOBO awards.

This shows that P-Square is making its mark in the industry with their fun and club-banging sounds. Although there has been an argument about whether they are a  good representation of African music or just American-wannabes, I think we need to give props where they are due.

SOULSTONE – “The Libra Sons”

Interview by Prudence Chauke | October 6, 2008 | Leave a Comment

SoulStoneIn an era where R&B and Neo-Soul bands are breaking up to pursue solo career’s, I’m excited to have come across a group of guys who are still following the path paved by the likes of the Temptations, and Boyz II Men. SoulStone, a musical trio consisting of Shaun, Clint, and Lindo, are a living “musical” proof that there are still talented bands in the industry. I recall how when I first discovered these crooners , how blown away I was with their work. They are effortlessly able to deliver as one union. It’s no wonder why their single” Now That Your Love Has Gone” has become a hit. I had the opportunity to learn more about these crooners’ journey, one that I’m excited to share with you all.

Jamati: First shed more light on your music and your work, and thanks for the opportunity to share your journey with the world.

Etran Finatawa

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | September 30, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Etran FinatawaThe Tuareg and the Wodaabe nomadic tribes have occasionally fought over land in the Sahel and Sahara regions of Niger, so it is interesting to note that members of both tribes came together in 2004 to form a 5 to 6-piece band called Etran Finatawa, which means “the stars of tradition.”

There are  Tuareg musicians on electric guitar and bass, and Wodaabe and Tuareg musicians on percussion and vocals. Their music has a Middle eastern hypnotic rhythm to it, punctuated by syncopated sounds and European influences.

Ray C – She’s….well…….Racy!

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | September 4, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Ray-CRay-C, born Rehema Chalamila, is at the top of the list for ummm….some pretty interesting music videos. She has more wiggles in her moves than Shakira and Beyonce combined, and she looks good doing it.  That could be due to the fact that she took belly dancing lessons (which she must have done really well in).

Ray-C worked as a DJ on a show, Dr. Beat, for Clouds FM Radio station in Tanzania and took vocal training lessons. The only musician to perform Bongo, Bhangra, Taarab and R&B in one album, she is affectionately known as Tanzania’s beauty queen. To date she has released three albums, Mapenzi Yangu (My Love), Na Wewe Milele (With You Forever) in 2004, and Ray-C. All albums have gone platinum.
