MTV Base Takes on HIV/AIDS
MTV is taking in HIV/AIDS with a new project called Ignite. Ignite, falling under MTV’s award winning Staying Alive campaign, addresses sexual networks, multiple partners, drug use and living with HIV, within the context of national cultures and norms. The campaign is being held simultaneously in Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Ukraine and will kick off with television dramas. The Ignite Kenya campaign is the biggest of the three.

Guests included Morgan Freeman, Donna Karan, Alfre Woodward, Karolina Krukova, Keisha Whitaker, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chris Chameleon, Freshly Ground, Emmanuel Jal, Loyiso, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, Angelique Kidjoe, Thandiswa Mazwai, Baaba Mal, Akon, Russell Simmons, Suzanna Owiyo, Gloria Gaynor (of ‘I Will Survive’ fame), and Josh Groban.

Born to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, she has been featured in several music videos, predominantly with R. Kelly, and has been in Motorsports Magazine, Jet Magazine, and Rolling Out Magazine.
She was on VH1’s reality series, ‘For The Love Of Ray-J‘ where she has managed to stay in the running for a long time against other girls vying for Ray J’s heart (and money). Nicola Breytenbach – Africa’s Angel
Nicola Breytenbach is a South-African model who has joined the Diamond Empowerment Fund as a pioneer of their Africa program called Africa’s Angels. This section of the Diamond Empowerment Fund is dedicated to having celebrities utilize their ability to leverage their influence, contacts and celebrity to raise awareness and funds in support of the organization’s vision to help Africans help Africa though education that empowers and provides tangible skills to help build lives.
Breytenbach moved to Netherlands from South Africa with her mother and stepfather when she was a teen. Her mother’s hairdresser convinced her to try out for modeling and she was catapulted into supermodel status. Her big break came when she was appointed as Dior’s in-house model. She went on to join Trump Models and landed a contract with Revlon for their ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ campaign. Her other jobs have included magazine shoots with Cosmopolitan, Elle magazine, Vogue and American Marie Claire, and runway jobs in Milan, Paris, London and New York for designers Chanel, Galliano and Dior. » Read more…
Ghana Fashions Weekend: Ziami moment lost in transit
The much anticipated showcasing of Boris Kodjoe’s Ziami clothing line at the Ghana Fashion Week 2009 could not materialize because he was unable to get his clothing line transported to Ghana before the close of the 4-day event. His presence throughout the event days, however, was met with complete admiration by the Ghanaian people, many of whom tried disparately to get a photo moment with the model/actor and designer.
The Accra International Conference Centre, venue for the Ghana Fashion Weekend dazzled with celebrities, and the glitz and glamour of high fashion from July 1-4, as dozens of designers from around the globe showcased chic, elegant, and some eccentric creations. The fashion event brought together established and upcoming designers from all over Africa including the likes of Modela (Nigeria), Alphadi (Niger), Boris Kodjoe (U.S.A), (Burkina Faso), Bazem Se (Burkina Faso), Morenikeji Agoro (Nigeria), Ousmane Doumbia (Cote Divoire), Amadou Diop (Senegal), Behen Parfait (Cameroon), Patrick Asso (Cote Divoire), and Dady De Maximo (Rwanda). » Read more…

Jonathan Amayo from Mode-HQ was on hand to answer technical questions during the Tech Talk segment of the festival. TV personality, Sal Masekela showed his support for musician Bill Withers during his performance with his wife, Kori.

Nollywood stakes its claim in Hollywood
Actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim was joined by Hollywood Celebrities for the “4th Annual Nollywood Convention’s VIP Banquet”. African actors Caroine Chikezie, Amanda Annan, Raz Adoti joined Hakeem to support this red carpet event for one of the biggest film industries in the world.
Attendees enjoyed Nigerian delicacies, a crowd stopping perfomance by soul singer “Sammie Jay”, Nollywood Films which were followed by Nigerian music. Also enjoying the evening were Alice Amter (The Big Bang Theory), Treva Etienne (Terminator Salvation), Ed Gale (Howard The Duck) and Julio Hanson (Angels and Demonds).
The banquet was a culmination of a 3-day Nollywood Convention at the Palomar Hotel in Westwood to raise awareness of the Nollywood industry to Hollywood. The Nollywood Foundation’s president, Professor Sylvester Ogbechie, shared that the Nigerian film industry has grown rapidly to become one of the largest film producing industries in the world. » Read more…

The Arise Africa Fashion Week went on from June 12 2009 to June 20, 2009 with a grand prize winner getting a chance to showcase their designs in New York’s Fashion Week. This was a great opportunity for the budding designers to get their work showcased on one of the most prestigious catwalks in the world.
The designers that participated came from South Africa, Madagascar, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Guinea, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Angola, Ivory Coast, Namibia, Martinique, Mozambique, Egypt, Botswana and Morocco.
