Estelle and Busta Rhymes shot a video for “World Go Round” in New York….hmm….I think we should start to call this segment Estelle watch.  She is everywhere.  Lemar took some time out from fatherhood to take in a premiere movie–”Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”.  Ozwald Boateng was at the same premiere with his children (they are adorable).

King Sunny Ade  was one of the feature artists at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and he also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival.  Jamie Foxx and Prince Ade Bamiro were also at the jazz festival celebrating the great music.

What is an African?

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | June 2, 2009 | Leave a Comment

CNN is currently inspiring dialogue about what makes someone an African-American as opposed to an African, African-American.  There has been debate amongst Africans about what an African is.  Is it someone who is born in Africa, or can someone who is born to African parents in the diaspora, but never raised in Africa, still claim that they are African?

Africans define themselves by who their parents are for the most part, although there are some who feel that if they are born in the diaspora, they are no longer African, just born to African parents.  Even more hotly contested, are the people who have one African parent.  Some claim that if they are not full-blooded Africans, they are not worthy of the title.  The latest Playboy playmate, Ida Ljungqvist, is half Tanzanian and half Swedish and was born and raised, for a while, in Tanzania, yet people claim that she isn’t African.  Why must anyone have to choose a side of their heritage?  And if they don’t deny it, why deny it of them? White and Asian Africans also find that they are constantly called upon to prove that they are African.  How many generations of African-born do they need to be to finally be called African?

Weekend Buzz

We haven’t heard anything about Estelle for a while.  She has been a little under the weather.  Maybe she was still shaken up by the fact that she was in the same area where Dolla got shot.  Anyway, she is none the worse for wear, and busy marketing herself in true Estelle style.  She performed at the Museum of Modern Art, helped H&M highlight Fashion Against AIDS, and performed at the Grammy Celebration Concert Tour.  Yup, she’s back!

Rapper, Wale, performed at the Sway and .Tel Pre Movie Awards Celebration and Korto Momolu helped aspiring designers realize their dreams at the 1st Annual African Fashion Designer’s Competiton.  Alek Wek looked fabulous in yellow but was sporting an orange cast at the 2009 Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Seal was in Turkey at the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya, Turkey to perform at the grand opening.  Overall, it was not too hectic a weekend.  Let’s see what next weekend brings.

One Day In Africa – A Journey Through 6 African Lives

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | June 1, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Africa is a mix of modern and traditional co-existing in a sort of uneasy existence.  Many movies capture one aspect of the culture or the other, very well, but few capture both sides in their entirety as well as this documentary about life in Africa.

The film takes you through the lives of 6 Africans from different countries in Africa and lets them tell you their tale.  Some tales are of living in poverty or chauvinism,  while others highlight the opulence that is also Africa.  Listen to the stories that they tell, understand the reasons behind the customs. There was some irony in the part of the film where a man stated that if “If we leave the farm work the women will just stay in the house and sleep”, while a man who is obviously in a deep sleep is stretched out in the background.  Such are the ironies of Africa.
