South Africa to play Mozambique in Cosafa Cup Final
South Africa will meet Mozambique in the final of the Cosafa Cup regional tournament. Bafana Bafana, who are represented by their development team, beat Zambia 1-0 in Wednesday’s semi-finals.
Diouf Makes Sunderland Switch
El-Hadji Diouf has moved to Sunderland for $5 million as the Black Cats continue their rebuilding plans ahead of the new Premier League season. Diouf leaves Bolton Wanderers, and has inked a four-year deal at the Stadium of Light after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms. The Senegalese international had been seeking a move away from Bolton since the end of last season and Sunderland have now taken him to Wearside.

Tanzanian champions Young Africans have been banned by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).
Tusker Win Cecafa Club Cup
Kenyan side, Tusker, came from behind to beat URA of Uganda 2-1 to win the East and Central Africa (Cecafa) Club Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday. Ismail Kigozi put URA in the lead after 25 minutes and they managed to protect their advantage until half-time.
Olofinjana Signs for Prem Newboys Stoke
Premiership newcomers Stoke City have confirmed the signing of Nigeria international midfielder Seyi “George” Olofinjana on a $6 million deal from Wolverhampton FC. The 28-year-old has penned a four-year contract with Tony Pulis’ side, with the deal subject to a work permit being granted. Olofinjana signed for Wolves from Norwegian side SK Brann for $3.4 million in July 2004, and played 147 games during his four-year stay at Molineux.
Man Utd. Edge Pompey 2-1 in Abuja
Fans of Premier League champions, Manchester United, watched the Red Devils end their tour of Africa with a win over Premier League rivals, Portsmouth, in Nigeria. The match heralded the first meeting between two English Premier League sides in west Africa, but the 60,000 Abuja National Stadium was less than half full with ticket prices thought to be at an exorbitant premium. Pompey had Nigerian John Utaka on display, but his compatriot, Nwankwo Kanu, missed out due to injury. Imposing central midfielder, Papa Bouba Diop, of Senegal was also on parade, though his regular partner, Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, was absent as he completes his transfer to Inter Milan.
Martins Mourns Mother
Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins’ agent has revealed the striker’s devastation at the death of his mother. The 23-year-old Nigeria international has flown home to be with his family after being given compassionate leave by his club.
Team Zimbabwe Unveiled
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) finally put weeks of speculation to rest by announcing a 13 member squad for the Beijing Olympics in China next month.”Team Zimbabwe” was unveiled at a function in Harare on Friday night. As expected, champion swimmer Kirsty Coventry — who scooped three medals at the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece — will once again spearhead the country’s medal hunt.
Team Nigeria Take Only Three Doctors Far East
No one expects Nigeria to win any medals at next month’s olympic games–save for Dream Team’s IV much touted ability to mount the podium in football. But here’s the bombshell: Team Nigeria will take only three doctors–in addition to the two attached to the men and women soccer teams–but more than 30 bureaucrats are currently clamoring for a space in the Nigerian contingent.
