Mensah Signs For Lyon

Seven-time Ligue 1 defending champions, Olympique Lyonnais, have completed the $13.2 million transfer of Rennes central defender John Mensah. The Ghana captain claims to have turned down offers to play in the English Premier League with Portsmouth and Wigan. “I had a few offers, mostly from English clubs but I opted for Lyon on the insistence of my agent,” remarked Mensah at his unveiling.

CAF: Champions League Group Stage Begins

Memories will come flooding back for both Dynamos and Asec Mimosas when they meet in this weekend’s opening Group A game of the 2008 Champions League.The duo met in the 1998 Champions League final, where Ivorians, Asec, triumphed 4-2 on aggregate over their Zimbabwean rivals. Although Asec have since turned out such stars as the Toure brothers and Aruna Dindane, it was Ivorian internationals of yesteryear–such as former Ivorian captain Tchiressoua Guel and Donald Sie–who inspired the success. Neither side have reached a final since, although Asec have twice made the semi-finals.

Ethiopia Names Olympics Track Team

On Monday one of Africa’s hopes for a large medal haul in the track events named its Olympics-bound squad. Ethiopia named a strong track team for the Beijing Olympics with world champions Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba doubling up in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres races. The other significant development is the inclusion of multiple world record holder Haile Gebrselassie in the 10,000m.

Benin’s Sessegnon Joins PSG

French Ligue Un club Paris St. Germain have signed Beninois midfielder, Stephane Sessegnon, from rivals Le Mans. Sessegnon, 24, scored five goals in 30 league appearances for Le Mans last season, and is a member of the current Benin team bidding for spots at Angola 2010, and South Africa 2010.

FIFA Considering Alternative WC 2010 Host

FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, claims he has spoken to three countries about hosting the 2010 World Cup if a natural disaster forces it away from South Africa. This is part of “Plan B” drawn up by FIFA with less than two years until the pinnacle of world sport heads to Africa for the first time.

Agogo Departs for Egypt

Nottingham Forest striker Junior Agogo has completed his move to Egyptian powerhouse, Zamalek Sporting Club for an undisclosed fee. The former Barnet and Queens Park Rangers forward has become a regular for the Black Stars of Ghana, scoring the winning goal in his country’s 2-1 victory over arch-rivals, Nigeria, in the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Cosafa Cup Rechristened

Southern Africa’s regional championship, the Cosafa Cup, returns later this month under a new name, new format, and with a new country participating. The annual tournament was seemingly headed for the doldrums after losing its previous sponsor, Castle, but it has been hastily resuscitated.

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA Cup

Esperance win 2008 Tunisia FA CupHicham Aboucherouane struck twice as Esperance beat Etoile du Sahel 2-1 to win the Tunisian FA Cup on Saturday. The Moroccan international gave Esperance a 12th minute lead after a defesive mix-up by the Etoile rearguard. The lead was short-lived, as Mehdi Meriah equalized within five minutes for last year’s African Champions League winners. However, Aboucherouane was to have the last word. With 11 minutes left on the clock, he pounced to score the winner and ensure a record breaking 12th cup success for the Blood and Gold.

SuperSport United and Right to Dream Academy in 2008 Manchester United Premier Cup World Finals

South African team SuperSport United beat South African MUPC Championships in Soweto to qualify for the World Finals of the 2008 Manchester United Premier Cup.  This competition has had over 9,400 teams competing in local, national and regional qualification tournaments over the past year an effort to win one of  twenty places at the Nike sponsored football competition for under-15’s.
