Phina Oruche – Model, Actress, Mother, Businesswoman
Phina Oruche has been on several shows and was the face of GAP for five years. She had a cameo as the cover model for the magazine on ABC’s Ugly Betty and was on the cover of Essence Magazine. In addition to the cameo, she has been on several shows, including The Bill, Nip/Tuck, Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Diagnosis Murder, NYPD Blue, The Forsaken and The Unit but got her fame in her role as Liberty Gidigbi on BBC’s Footballer’s Wives.

Joëlle Kayembe is a Congolese-born model who has lived in South Africa since the age of 11. She spent all of her teenage years in South Africa, in Johannesburg with her family because of the war that shattered her native country, Congo.

A year ago we talked about a video model who was scorching the music videos with her presence. Cynthia Masasi has been in several music videos and has opened a boutique in Tanzania. Her stepfather is the Mayor of Mwanza, a town in Tanzania, and her mother owns a Coca Cola depot in the city. Her father passed away in 1995.

Some of you saw Gelila Bekele gracing the arm of Tyler Perry in the opening of his production studio and wondered who she is. She is his girlfriend, and an accomplished model.
She has been a model for Pantene and Colgate and is signed up with both Ford Models and JE Models. Her portfolio consists of mostly print work with some runway work.

Tiguida – Malian Beauty
Tiguida is a Malian model whose flawless beauty has been featured in several magazines and on several catwalks. She has, however, had to deal with the fact that being black in the modeling industry is not always a positive thing and has mentioned, in interviews, the challenges that she faces trying to make it as a black model in an industry that is not very receptive to models of color.

Ajuma Naseyana – Sinewy Grace on International Catwalks
Born to a mother who the first woman of her generation in the Turkana area (Northern Kenya) to receive an education (she then went on to open and run the Women’s Center in Lodwar), Ajuma could not help but be destined for great things.

Waris Dirie – A True Desert Flower
Waris Dirie, a former Somalian model, wrote a book (Desert Flower, which is the meaning of her name) that highlighted the horrors she faced as a 13 year old child forced into a marriage to a 61 year old man. This after having had to deal with female genital mutilation at the age of 5.
Determined not to allow this to rule her destiny, she picked herself up and ran to her sister’s house where she was shuttled between her house and those of various aunts and uncles. She is probably one of the most controversial models, and the most well known. You have seen her in music videos, enjoyed her as the May 2008 Playboy Babe of The Month, and drooled over her in her new movie, ” Crazy Like a Fox“. Angel Melaku, also known as Lola Lov and Angel Fershgenet has been the cover model on XXL Magazine, Black Men, and King Magazine, to name a few, and is an ambitious lady with big dreams. Vibe Magazine had her dress up in a Marilyn Monroe-style that was quite becoming.
Atong Arjok – Her Beauty Shines Through
Atong Arjok is a gorgeous Sudanese/American lady. At 5′ 9″, she is a favorite of LaCoste, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Catherine Malandrino, among others. She has been a model on Project Runway, been featured in a Converse campaign, and a Prescriptives campaign.
She has lots of features that remind us of her Sudanese compatriot, Alek Wek, with elegant dark skin, a svelte figure, and graceful features. Expect to see much more of this lovely lady in print and on the catwalk.
Terry Pheto – ‘Tsotsi’s’ leading lady takes Paris by storm.
She was the leading lady in the movie, Tsotsi, that made history by being a film that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2006. Now Terry Pheto is making her own history as the new face of L’ Oreal Paris, a major international cosmetic company.
This South African beauty had to compete against a hundred other hopefuls for an opportunity to be one of the few black’s to represent the cosmetic company. » Read more…
