Fashioning barkcloth for clothing and interior decoration

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | April 19, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Michael Kirkpatrick can be considered a sort of accidental activist when it comes to the barkcloth industry.  His love for Uganda and the industry was forged by a visit to Uganda with his wife in 1998 to see the work of a friend who had founded grassroots organization to help the orphans and rural peasants devastated by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  His determination to make a difference resulted in several more trips to Uganda, and the development of a network of government officials, business people, religious leaders, artists, musicians, farmers, and rural villagers.

He currently serves on the Advisory Board for The Africa Bazaar magazine, a luxury magazine that covers business and investment opportunities on the African continent, based in New York City, USA. He is also a volunteer with Let Art Talk in Kampala, Uganda. The organization uses art an educational tool to teach underprivileged and vulnerable children and communities.

Micaela Patricia Reis – Angola’s beauty

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | April 6, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Micaela Patricia Reis is an Angolan beauty pageant winner (Miss Angola 2007).  She came in seventh in the 2007 Miss Universe (the competition must have been VERY stiff), and was runner up in Miss World 2007.  She also won the  2007 Miss World Continental Queen Of Africa title.

Micaela was born in Portugal and grew up in Portugal and Angola.  Her Portuguese father died when she was an infant so she was raised by her Angolan mother and siblings. Although she did go through some discrimination from both Africans and Europeans, she seems to have risen above it.  The Angola Press featured her as one of the world’s ten most beautiful women.

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | March 14, 2011 | Leave a Comment

We previously showcased some of his designs on Jamati Online, but, with the focus on “African Inspired” designs by non-African designers (including the controversial L’Officiel photoshoot with Beyonce), we thought we would highlight some more delightful designs (by an African designer) for our audience.

Here is why African design is so popular. It is unique, vibrant, edgy, creative, and pushes style to the most glorious heights.  Add bold designs to the mix and what you get is an African inspiration that is well ahead of its time.

So Beyonce is back in the news, but not for another great video or a great song.  She is in the news for wearing blackface during a photoshoot for ‘L’Officiel‘.  I think that, in a sense, ‘L’Officiel’ was smart to do something controversial, if only to draw eyes to the magazine.
