The girls in the ‘Stars of the Future’ singing competition brought some of Africa’s biggest music divas alive on the night of African music. For one night only, Stephanie, Anita and Adina got to wear the shoes of Marian Makeba, Angelique Kidjoe and Brenda Fassie as, one by one, they rendered a song each from these music greats.
They set the auditorium of the Ghana National Theatre agog with deafening cheers, giving credence to widespread suggestions that this season of ‘Stars of the Future’ belongs to a girl. Although I previously ruled out Stephanie from the Top 4, she has fought back really well and might sneak into that top zone; her last two performances have been just short of terrific! Her soothing rendition of ‘Malaika’ really brought her back into the competition.
The boys aren’t going down without a fight either; the strongest male contestant in my view, Daniel definitely deserves a spot in the Top 4. He performed Salif Keita’s ‘Africa’ perfectly well. He has been very consistent and it would be a travesty of justice if he didn’t make to the finale on August 23. Ike did a Sunny Okposo song justice, but didn’t win the judges over because they felt the song wasn’t in agreement with the African theme. The judges wanted to hear original African songs and not just songs done by Africans. Same could be said about Joe who did 2Face’s ‘African Queen’. In my book, Joe didn’t only deviate, but was the weakest link of the night. Maybe I got tired of hearing him sing like Aaron Neville all the time. LOL! Good luck to them all since I don’t get to choose the finalists.
