Kwaw Kesse ruled Ghana’s hip-hop scene in the past year and he hopes to extend his reign to the rest of Africa. Well, with the assistance of MTV Base, his dream may soon become a reality as he just got the chance to collaborate with Tanzania’s hip-hop superstar, Professor J.
The MTV ‘Making the Video Challenge’ with Shell team is currently in Accra to shoot a video for the remix to Kwaw Kesse’s ‘Who Be You’ featuring Professor J. The video will be shot by a team of Ghanaian directors under the mentorship of veteran director, Anthony Mandler. Mandler has worked with the likes of Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Omarion, Rihanna, and One Republic. The music video will be premiered on Saturday, September 27, at the Aphrodisiac Nite Club in Ghana and, subsequently, on MTV Base and its affiliate TV stations across Africa.
Kwaw Kesse’s music video will be produced by a team of Ghanaian music video professionals and enthusiastic amateurs chosen by Anthony Mandler in collaboration with Kwaw Kesse and Professor J. A competition will be set up between four teams of directors from across Ghana. The four teams will compete against each other to come up with the most creative, original conceptual video and the team with the strongest idea will be chosen to work on the music video under the mentorship of Mandler.
Professor J who addressed the press together with Kwaw Kesse in Accra said, “This is my first time working with an artist from Ghana and West Africa so it is an amazing opportunity for me to be here. I have been dreaming about this and MTV and Shell have made it possible”.
Similar projects have already been completed in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria as part of the second season of MTV ‘Making the Video Challenge’ with Shell. The welcomed twist to this year’s series is that several artists from different regions in Africa have had the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from other parts of Africa. South African kwaito artist, Bleksem and Mozambique’s Dama do Bling collaborated on ‘ Wena Uthini’ and their video was mentored by Little X; in Kenya, Wahu and Bobby Wine collaborated on ‘Little Things You Do’ under US director Melina; and in Nigeria, Ghana’s Okyeame Kwame featured on the remix to Olu Maintain’s ‘Yahoozee’.
