I enjoyed seeing Presley in the movie Tsotsi. The movie got much buzz and I just knew I’d see Presley on US television or in another big movie.
But Hollywood is what it is and Presley was nowhere to be seen after the oscar buzz died down.
Presley is finally back on the scene with a new movie called More Than Just A Game. The film tells the astonishing story of how political prisoners on Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in captivity, used soccer as one of the means of surviving the brutal regime imposed on them in the Apartheid era.
Much of the movie was shot on Robben Island. Prisoners were allowed to play soccer because it was looked at as recreation. But it turned into much more. The league became a very big deal.
Presley plays the role of Shinners, a leader of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) - an off-spring of the governing African National Congress (ANC). Shinners had been imprisoned on the Pacific ocean island from 1963 to 1973, and was sent back after being tried with seventeen others in the 1978-1979 Bethal 18 trial.
South Africa is the host of the 2010 FIFA world cup.
The movie will premiere in South Africa this week.
