Olusegun “Sheg” Aranmolate is a contestant on the latest reality show with a twist. No more watching conniving roomates try to lie and steal from each other in order to make the most money. Oprah, the innovator that she is, give us a contest where the big winner is the one who gives away the most money. It’s heartwarming and had most of the reciepients crying like babies.
Sheg Aranmolate, a Nigerian, is a medical researcher at Vanderbilt University who has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, and a master’s degree in applied molecular biology. He founded The Aranmolate Foundation for Deformed Children with his father and, while he raises awareness about the foundation and its work, his father does pro-bono surgeries in Nigeria. Talk about already being a big giver. He is married with one daughter, Nilaja.
With a photograph, a clue, $2500, and 5 days to get it done, the contestants went out to figure out how to help. Sheg teamed up with Carlana to help Eric pay off some of his medical school debt. They decided to do a fashion show and have the audience donate money at the end of it. It didn’t quite work out as planned and the judges were struck by the lack of proper planning and anticipation. Jamie Foxx saved the day when he sent in a check for $50,000 to help reduce Eric’s debt. Fortunately they survived the first round and, hopefully, learned the lessons needed to move to round three.
The most heartfelt response came from the team of Stephen and Eric who helped a mother whose husband was murdered. They raised enough money to help pay off her mortgage, rallied support of the neighborhood, and got scholarships for both her children from elementary school, all the way to college. The judges loved the way that they helped the family, got the neighborhood involved, took care of the children’s education, and helped a little with the healing process by having each of the children, and the mother, write notes that they put in balloons to send up to heaven.
The show is great to watch and a testimony to the generous spirit that still abounds in people today. The next episode will be on Sunday March 9, 2008 where the challenge will be in Denver and there will be a twist. Visit the website for more information.
