From Creador Pictures, LLC, “Afro Latinos: The Untaught Story” is a seven-part documentary television series that covers the stories of Afro-Latinos through the exploration of history, language, religion, food, identity, art, music, and social issues.

Who are Afro Latinos? Afro Latinos are the “descendants of the enslaved Africans who were forcibly taken from their land and dispersed throughout Latin America.”
I’m really looking forward to this series. I took a look and the trailer and website and was extremely impressed. Naming the series Afro Latinos: The Untaught Story is appropriate, because the history of the global African presence as well as African achievements have often been ignored or whitewashed in academia.

Afro Latinos: The Untaught Story aims to show the history and celebrate the “rich culture of people in Latin America of African descent. From the story of how and when slaves came to Central and South America to identity issues that still exist in the Hispanic community today.”

“There are an estimated 200 million Afro-descendants in Latin America but the majority of them do not have political or economic power.”
Afro Latinos: The Untaught Story will air in late 2010. For a sneak peek into the documentary and to learn more about Afro-Latinos, click here.

The site is immensely informative. You can listen to Latin music influenced by African beats, check out book picks on the rich history of Afro-Latinos, and see photos of the filmmakers’ travels through such countries as Haiti, Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Peru.
