Talk about Africans being everywhere. I had the chance to watch the remake of the Tony award-winning play, A Raisin in the Sun, with Sean P. Diddy Combs, Sanaa Lathan, Phylisha Rashad, and Bill Nunn. Imagine my surprise when an African brother showed up with words of inspiration for Sanaa Lathan’s character. Turns out it is a very talented actor, David Oyelowo, who plays the character, Asagai. David made history in 2000 by becoming the first black actor to portray an English monarch, Henry VI, for the Royal Shakespeare Company. This performance earned him the Ian Charleson Award in 2001. He also won the 2007 Satellite Best Actor Award for his performance in the movie, Five Days.
In the show on ABC, he offers to take Beneatha to Nigeria and bring her a cool drink of water with a calabash, teach her the customs of the Yoruba and expand her horizons. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
