I don’t know for a fact but I am willing to stick my neck out and say that Ghana’s “Kyeiwaa” is the African movie with the most sequels ever. The 10-part movie about Kyeiwaa, an uncompromising witch, caused quite a stir among movie lovers in Ghana. The twists and turns of Kyeiwaa’s journey in and out of witchcraft made for interesting viewing for many. However, for those who decry the level of mediocrity in Ghanaian movies, it was a nightmarish blot on the industry.
Her role as the lead actress has made Akua Ataa one of the most sought after actresses in Ghana at the moment. She has become very popular with viewers, and very often people refer to her as Kyeiwaa rather than her real name. She, however, hasn’t gained international recognition like Nadia Buari or Jackie Appiah perhaps because she doesn’t look as sexy, and I am sure that her inability to speak fluent English is also a factor.
As if the ten parts to the story was not enough, a new movie titled Kyeiwaa Ba (translated as Kyeiwaa’s Daughter) has been started. This chronicles the life of Kyeiwaa’s daughter, and yes, she is also a witch. Kyeiwaa Ba Part Two is already out there and I wonder where it will end. The amazing thing is that all these movies have been acted in a space of less than one year. How was this possible? Perhaps the director is a witch as well.
