“Warmhearted and cheerful! A force of nature!” – Roger Ebert
Similar sentiments have been echoed about Ramin Bahrani’s (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop) latest film GOODBYE SOLO, starring newcomer Souléymane Sy Savané, Red West (Walking Tall, The Duke), and Diano Franco Galindo. The film centers on two main characters Solo (Souléymane Sy Savané), a free-spirited Senegalese cab driver and William (Red West), an older Southern man with seemingly a chip on his shoulder. Throughout the film, we try to not only piece together William’s story and understand why he looks at life so pessimistically, but also, to understand Solo’s own ambitions. While Solo strives towards what is percieved as the American dream, William sees life quite differently. In GOODBYE SOLO, these two men forge a friendship despite their age difference and draw the necessary strength from each other to move towards their dreams, no matter what they may be.
GOODBYE SOLO screened at the Toronto Film Festival and premiered as an official selection of the Venice Film Festival (2008), where it was awarded the prestigious FIPRESI Critic’s Prize for best film.
A candid film worth checking out, you can learn more about GOODBYE SOLO on the film’s official website.

I can’t wait to see this in Charlotte! I’ve heard so much about this film, and a big fan of both Man Push Cart and Chop Shop. The story line seems great, too – from a filmmaker who treats his audience with intelligence rather than what I usually end up fast forwarding though. Plus, I can’t wait to see NC in film in something other than a bad movie like Leathernecks or Leatherheads or whatever that Clooney movie was….

I saw the film and met Souleymane. He is charming and amazing and will be appearing in a play in NYC called Groundswell beginning in May. Check it out at the New Group.
