Washington, D.C., May 6, 2009: Jamati.com is pleased to continue its partnership with Passport to Africa, which this year will include the sponsorship of a Film Night on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. The Jamati Film Section will introduce one of the most acclaimed African films of the year, “From A Whisper,” to a diverse Washington DC audience.

Passport to Africa is an Annual week-long celebration of Africa’s diverse culture. This year marks the third year that IDOA Entertainment has produced this event in the Washington DC Area and the second year that Jamati has teamed up with I Dream Of Africa (IDOA) Entertainment during Passport to Africa week. Diaspora Interactive Media Corp Founder and CEO Elias Mageto, said “We’re always pleased to be a part of IDOA Entertainment’s high-impact events, and are especially proud to present an award-winning African film and celebrate a highly acclaimed African Director, at this year’s festivities.”
“From a Whisper“, a Kenyan film that explores the 1998 bombing of the American Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, is a clear superstar, winning five top prizes at the 5th African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) that was held in Nigeria last month.
“From a Whisper” received the Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Original Soundtrack and AMAA Achievement in Editing awards, displacing the Nigerian Nollywood films that typically dominate these categories. The movie, directed by Wanuri Kahiu, commemorates the 10th anniversary of the August 7th terrorist bombing in Kenya in 1998, in which over 250 people died and more than 5,000 were injured. A tragedy, that could easily be compared with the 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Center in 2001.
“From a Whisper” shot entirely in Nairobi, Kenya draws from a powerful script to tell a very touching story of the bombing aftermath through the lives of several victims and their families who had to pick-up the pieces of their lives shredded by the blast.
This screening will be a wonderful opportunity to experience one of the most talked about African films and directors this year. Tickets can be purchased for $5 at Union Station 9, 50 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Washington, D.C. on the day of the event.
