Liya Kebede

According to AOL Black Voices, Ethiopian supermodel Liya Kebede has been tapped to play Somali model Waris Dirie in Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey of a Desert Nomad, a film based on Dirie’s successful autobiography about her experience with female circumcision. Kebede will start filming in Europe in June.

Published in 1997, Desert Flower traced the events of Dirie’s childhood and her rise to international fame. The book was translated into major international languages and spent 120 weeks on Germany’s bestseller list. Dirie eventually gave up modeling to become the United Nations spokesperson for the campaign against female circumcision.

Desert Flower was a very interesting read. My hope is that it’s in capable hands because it has a lot of potential as a screen play.
