Cass
Cass opens with a scene at a nightclub in South London where two assasins lie in wait for Cass, a 35 year old man. The assasins are from a rival Arsenal gang and Cass is a West Ham fan. As he arrives in a taxi and gets ready to enter the club, he is shot at point blank range.
The story of Cass’ life begins as he describes his life and the violence he gets involved in, in the name of soccer. An orphaned Jamaican brought up by an elderly white couple in the very tough and very racist South East of the 60s. Bullied from the outset for being a rare black face and having the popular West Indian name of Carol was never going to do our lad any favours. It all begins to change in 1972 when Cass is 14 and has suffered prejudice and incessant teasing. He finds that when he gets into a fight to defend some West Ham supporters, he gains respect from the kids around him. This launches him into a fight that leads to a way of life for him. He becomes the head of West Ham’s notorious gang of terrace warriors, the Inter City Firm and continues down a road of violence that leads to his inevitable time in jail.
He decides to turn his life around, starts working the doors of clubs, and settles into fatherhood. He later becomes a bestselling author and a successful businessman.
Nonso Anozie gives a great performance and has been touted as a great actor who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Watching this movie, one gets a chance to see the depth of his abilities. Tamer Hassan and Nathalie Press round out the movie well.
