‘Taharuki’ Brings Suspense to the NY African Film Festival
Set in Kenya amidst 2007-2008 post-election violence, ‘Taharuki’ screened earlier this month at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater as part the 2011 New York African Film Festival, a festival which bills itself as a “celebration of African arts and culture.”

Themba is the story of a young man who has determined to make things right for his family. His father has disappeared and his stepfather, Luthando, has started to be abusive towards him and his sister. ‘Elevate’ follows the lives of four boys from Senegal who join the SEEDS Academy, a one-of-a-kind boarding school for basketball players. Their goal is to earn a scholarship to a U.S. prep school, which hopefully will begin their journey to play in the NBA.

Khaleed Leon Thomas is Khleo to you music fans
Some of you may remember the quirky little kid, Zero, from the film “Holes“ or Mixed Mike from “Rollbounce”. He also starred in ‘Walking Tall’ opposite Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) in 2004 and ‘Remember the Daze’ starring Amber Heard in 2007. His real name is Khaleed Leon Thomas and he is an actor, singer, rapper and entertainer. Khleo’s mother is Moroccan and his father is African-American.
Khaleed raps under the name Khleo and has proven to be extremely versatile. He is very good friends with Bow Wow and collaborated with him and other rappers and musicians on an album titled ‘Just A Sample‘. He made a video for one of the songs on the album titled ‘Lights Out and it has been very well received’. You might have caught him in cameos on several Bow Wow videos including ‘Fresh Azimiz‘, ‘Outta Ma System‘, and with Soulja Boy on ‘Pretty Boy Swag‘.

Alambamento – A tale of love, dowry, and reality
‘Alambamento’ is a film written and directed by Mário Bastos who was born and raised in Luanda. This short film, set in the city of Luanda, tells the story of a young man, Matias, with the ‘simple’ dream of trying to stay with the person he loves. He goes to deliver his dowry to his fiancé’s father and is involved in an unexpected accident. In this town, where chaos and peace, beauty and ugliness, corruption and honor meet, Matias will have to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.

Imani – A moving look at three separate lives
Imani is the story of three different people who are having to make decisions that are affected by their past and will affect their future. Directed by Caroline Kamya, it takes an in-depth look at the issues that face the three characters and the factors that influence their life decisions. Contemporary music and local/traditional music are interwoven, forming a fitting backdrop for the characters’ experiences. The story is written by Agnes Kamya who is a social anthropologist.

Native Sun – a musical journey of a young boy searching for his father
Blitz the Ambassador is a very talented young man. Dedicated to making a change through intelligent, creative rap and music, he is now venturing into a new medium–film. His first endeavor, ‘Native Sun‘, is a story about a creative young boy who is searching for his father. Set in Ghana, the film attempts to “……capture the beauty, conflicts, and contradictions, of Ghana through the whimsical eyes of a young boy.” He wrote and co-directed the film. The executive producers were MoCADA, Judith Aidoo, and Janet Bazawule, and the co-director was Terence Nance. Cinematography is by Shawn Peters, and it is produced by James Bartlett.

Soul Boy – A young boy must save his father’s soul
Nairobi, Kenya. 14 year-old Abila (Samson Odhiambo) lives with his parents in Kibera, one of the largest slums in East Africa. One morning the teenager discovers his father ill and delirious. Someone has stolen his soul, mumbles the father as he sits huddled in a corner. Abila is shocked and confused but wants to help his father and goes in search of a suitable cure.
