The Legend of the Sky Kingdom is a cartoon that was made featuring characters made up of bits of junk (all the characters are made from pieces of trash). It is a story about the resilience of a group children who escape from an underground city and travel through the Jungle of Despair, and the Desert of Desolation as they try to evade the evil emperor’s hyenas.
This is the first stop-motion animation film made in Zimbabwe and based on a children’s book of the same name by Phil Cunningham, who was also the film’s producer. The filmmakers call this animation style “junkmation”. The filmmakers also spent two years custom-building a motion camera out of bicycle parts because they did not have the money to buy a professional one from the West.
The Legend of the Sky has garnered a great number of awards and is a wonderful story of resilience in the face of adversity. The same could be said of the filmakers.
