This documentary highlights the $250 million dollar-yearly industry that is Nollywood. Fueled by crime and insecurity, people resorted to watching videos in the safety of their homes. The first Nollywood movie, Living in Bondage, was a huge success and paved the way for a new industry. This is Nollywood reveals the issues that Nollywood producers face, the obstacles they must overcome, and the small budgets they work with.
In the documentary, This is Nollywood, we travel with the directors and producers as they work to get the movie done. Actors don’t show up, payments are handed out, and last minute changes are accomodated to ensure that the film is completed. One can only imagine how well this would work in Hollywood on the same budget (about $20,000). The producers are anxious to let us know their stories, and are passionate about the movies. Their dedication to their craft is evident in their relentless movement towards completion of their goals. In spite of these challenges, they still manage to churn out several movies a year. The documentary also highlights the fact that this is a new form of storytelling that brings the essence of Nigeria’s culture to life through the eyes of the producers. The documentary is indeed a nod to the incredible world that is Nollywood.
