Wanuri Kahiu is a mild-mannered young lady with a charming spirit. Her movies show her understanding of the audience she is trying to reach and her ability to draw them into the story she is telling. A graduate of the University of Warwick, UK where she earned a BSc degree in Management Science in 2001, she went on to enroll in the Masters of Fine Arts program in Directing in the School of Film and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles where she received the Motion Pictures of America Associates Award and the Hollywood Foreign Press Award for distinguished director.
‘From A Whisper’, the movie that won five awards at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), is a story about what is essentially Kenya’s 9/11 experience–the bombing of the American Embassy in Kenya. Seen through the eyes of people who were there, the film is compelling and highlights the pain and suffering that the local people went through as they grieved the loss of loved ones. The movie won the best director, screenplay, picture, original soundtrack, and AMAA achievement in editing in categories that had her going against notable Nigerian entries such as Tunde Kelani in the film Arugba, Tchidi Chikere- ‘Beautiful Soul‘, and Modupe Teni.
‘From A Whisper’ is her sophomore production. She had similar success with her previous film, ‘Ras Star‘, a story about an aspiring rapper enlists her brother’s help in finding a way to make money to get into talent show finals. Her stories are cutting edge, embracing the crossroads the people reach
We look forward to seeing more from this film director in the near future.
