Seun Kuti at Summerstage

Written by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | August 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Fiery. Commanding. Omnipresent–On stage that is. Seun Kuti, the heir apparent to Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s throne strutted his stuff this summer in NYC’s Central Park at the prestigious Summerstage 2008. His slim-flitting pants, receding hairline, physique, and two-fisted salute evoked memories of his father, as did the two dancers on stage. Their rhythmical movements drew constant “ooohs” and “aaahhhhs” from the large crowd on hand, and Kuti performed “Oil,” “Don’t Bring That Sh*t,” and “Many Things,”–the title of his debut album–amongst others while the tunes from his sax and the beautiful sunset complemented each other.

Written by Ameyaw Debrah | August 25, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The most intrusive reality TV series in the world, Big Brother makes a glorious return to Africa. As the world said goodbye to the Olympic Games on Sunday August 24, Africa said hello to season 3 of Big Brother Africa (BBA3). For the next 96 days, viewers across Africa will intrude into the lives of 12 housemates selected from 12 African countries on DSTV.

For a reward of 100,000 US dollars, these 12 housemates will plot and scheme as well as let themselves loose under the watchful eyes of millions of viewers. Everyone’s favourite ‘shower hour’ will certainly have people up early and staying glued to their TV sets. The often steamy session of BBA has gradually created a voyeur continent out of Africa and in fact many people criticised Big Brother Nigeria for not showing housemates taking their shower. Nigerian legislators even tried to ban BBA in Nigeria this year but to no avail. By the way, doesn’t Nigeria have bigger and real problems to solve? » Read more…

konte-0207.jpgWith a name meaning “Father Storyteller”, Keba Armand Konte has certainly made it his life work to tell the stories of some of the most important moments and influential people in recent history through his incredibly deep photo montages. Using wood and other materials on which to transpose photographic images, Konte’s works do not only depict great moments in history. These moments are displayed atop a piece of the history itself. Konte utilizes this technique in one of his recent pieces “NOLA’s Ark: Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?” in which he set transparent images of the devastation of Katrina atop pieces of rubble left behind in the storm, creating a material memory.

Gambian-born Howsoon Cham is not one to back off a challenge. When he purchased Red Ginger in Georgetown, Washington DC, he had all the staff throw out all the food into trash cans, brought in a whole new menu and food items, and did this all on a day when they were expecting a party of thirty. The staff almost had a stroke! He introduced a Caribbean/Latin American menu that has become very popular in the area.

Interview by Prudence Chauke | August 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment

As a foreigner I know how it feels like to turn from one radio station to another in the hope of hearing something that is a reminder of one’s mother land–whether it be a song in an African language, issues about Africans, or even hearing an African radio personality on the air.
