Not only has she been nominated for both the “Artist of the Year” and the “Best Female Act” at the 2008 MTV Africa Music Awards, but Asa was also nominated for the “Best African Act” at the 2008 MOBO Awards beside trailblazing artists like Estelle and Dizzee Rascal. Born in Paris but Nigerian-raised, Asa is a product of two Nigerian parents who, when she was only two, returned back to settle in the “New York City” of Nigeria–Lagos.
As a child growing up with a music lover for a father, she listened to the likes of Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklen, Marvin Gaye, Lagbaja, and Ebenezer Obey. It was obviously time destined for her to answer to her musical call. Drawing inspiration from all the artists that she listened to growing up, Asa started connecting all the elements that make her the trailblazing artist she is.
So often mistaken for the great India Arie because of the neo-soul swagger she carries and her intoxicating guitar playing skills she has shared the stage with notable greats such as like The Nubians, Tony Allen, Doctor L, and Manu Dibangu. She has also starred as the opening act for Akon, Beyonce, and John Legend.
African Neo-soul, reggae, funk and R&B couldn’t sound any better and Asa takes it to new heights. As the (MAMA) Awards approach, I sincerely hope that Asa takes home some award cause she is truly a real talent.
