Netsayi – Chimurenga Soul

chimurenga coverNetsayi was born in London in 1973 to Zimbabwean parents. The family moved back to Zimbabwe when she was seven years old and the impression of the country left its imprint indelibly on her mind. Music influences including kwasa from the Congo, South African jazz and pop, local jit, mbira, UK and US R&B, and the beginnings of hip hop, all combined to provide a great smorgasbord of musical influence.

Netsayi

Netsayi has hit a goldmine with her latest album, Chimurenga Soul which she has released under her own label, Militant Prince. She has an India Arie/Des’ree quality to her voice which is deep and soulful. The songs and rythyms are a tribute to her Zimbabwe roots and she blends traditional and western instruments easily to produce a great mix of music. Beyond the Moon highlights her strong vocal abilities and is accompanied by a simple, beautiful melody. Bukatiende has the traditional instruments forming the main melody. Overall the music and style are very soothing with an African beat that takes you back to lazy, peaceful days.
