This is one man who needs no introduction in the Kenyan music industry. Nonini is dubbed “The African King of Genge music” ( ‘Genge’ a Swahili word meaning ‘masses’). First I must admit that because of my below average Swahili , it took me some time to fully tap into his music and allow my musical self to indulge in a Nonini musical experience but as soon as I successfully got through the first track from his latest album “Hanyaring Game“, I was hooked. “Hanyaring Game” is a a love experience from the first meeting of his Nairobi girl, through the courting stages, to him realizing that she might just be the potential life partner. But before taking the ultimate step they endure hardships that unexpectedly reveal an interesting ending to their union.
It is always exciting to witness a hardcore artist like Nonini letting loose and letting society know that even guys like him go through love and that its okay to get “whipped” at times. The rest of the songs in his 14-track album are dedicated to paying tribute to those who have passed, including his brother, and musical legends who have passed on. The last track on the album is a celebration of his journey in the industry from his starting point to his achievements.
Its no doubt that he is one of the most tightest emcees in the Kenyan industry, always producing high quality material that carries a message with it . Already scooping awards left and right and adding entrepreneur to his titles, Nonini is one to watch out for in the industry. All hip-hop fans, especially those with a good understanding of the Swahili language will enjoy the music that he produces. Even if you don’t know the language, the universal language of music will undoubtedly keep you highly entertained.

Nonini’s music is jolly interesting, though now that he has clearly earned international fame or some ‘credence’, as far as contemporary african pop is concerned, shouldn’t he now try and focus on the content of what he sings about? I mean using his musical platform in addressing “real” societal issues whether social, cultural or of a political nature in relation to his society as opposed to just focusing on the urban genre…

Nonini is the most unruly celeb i have ever seen. u have really disappointed us Kenyans. u need to be thought a little respect. I can’t compare u 2 bushmen, even though they have no idea of clothes at least they reason and fetch leaves to cover their nekedness.i can’t imagine how you remember to put on clothes. the words u sing is just like showing ua private parts in public. and u call uaself king of genge,

I just discovered this music today! HONGERA Nonini. I give you a thumbs up. Creative and original, stay focused on entertaining the masses (genge)….I see some player haters trying to be bitter here. Keep on big boy! Tell then to have the game, not the player!
Social plantform to address? Have people not had enough of the povery and plight in and from Africa, It is time people hear someting else. Africa is not just all about gloom and social apathy, there is life too.
I love you Nonini!!!!
