In a hip-hop, male-dominated industry, female MC’s still have a hard time trying to break into the hip-hop industry. I’m talking about how we’ve continuously seen females come and go out of the industry with some just laying the swords down and refusing to fight in this male dominated jungle. Those who do fight come to terms with the harsh reality that at the end of the day, no matter how hard they work, their victory will always be less than that of the male hip-hop artists. Although the struggle is far from over, I am here to shine the light and share some rays of hope by musically introducing you to Fatou Mandiang Diatta a.k.a Sister Fa.
A female MC from the outskirts of Dakar, Senagal who emerged in the hip-hop industry in late 2000 using her artistry to raise awareness against the wide spread practice of female genital multilation and speaking up against the wrong-doings against those most vulnerable. From her humble beginnings in Senegal to her up-rising statues in Berlin, Germany, Sister Fa has not laid down her sword. She’s still winning her victory in the male-dominated, hip-hop jungle. She has already scooped the “Best Newcomer” award at the Senegal hip-hop awards and is breaking boundaries by not letting her hustle fire burn down. She’s still releasing amazing influential material that hit home using the Wolof, Manding, Jola and French language.
This young role model and the proclaimed Senegalese Queen of hip-hop is shaping and changing lives through her music and staying true to her brand. Most importantly, she is paving the way for other female MC warrior’s who have what it takes to survive in the hip-hop jungle.
