Wayna is a very talented singer, based in Washington DC, who is making waves (although, after listening to Higher Ground, I am not sure why she isn’t signed to a major label yet) on the local scene. We had talked to her previously, and now have the privilege of reviewing her latest album, Higher Ground.
Higher Ground is a journey into clever wordplay, Erykah Badu style singing, and musically intelligent tunes. It has been a while since I have listened to an album and enjoyed more than 4 songs on one album. Moonlight Rendevous has a catchy beat to it while Billy Club is a clever analysis of police brutality (you have to listen to figure it out). Her sort of reggae-soul take of the song Loving You, is very nice. I listened to Mr. Duracell and didn’t catch what it was about because I was so immersed in the neo-soul smooth beat it had. I finally figured it out and…well…….shhhhh….let’s just say you have to listen to it!
Wayna is a talented writer who wrote the lyrics to her songs. Her prowess in weaving great storylines into a very creative sound showcases just how versatile she really is. This CD is definitely a must-have for your collection. To learn more about her, visit her website or her myspace page.
