Skateboarding becoming big in East Africa

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | July 19, 2011 | Leave a Comment

When we think of skateboarding, we don’t often think of Africans doing it.  Uganda, however, has a Skateboard Union (the Uganda Skateboard Union )that was formed when two friends got together and built a skatepark.  Jackson Mubiru (Uganda) and Shael Swart (South Africa) kicked it off with some ramps that they built after collecting materials for it.    Jackson’s (Jack to everyone) family donated some land toward the cause and a local department store donated two skateboards.  Shael had to leave after he completed high school, but taught the volunteers the basics of skateboarding.
