Bernard Lagat qualified for the Olympics in the 1500m. Lagat is a Kenyan runner who became a naturalized citizen and will be running under the American flag for the first time in the Olympics. He won the bronze medal in in the 1,500 meters at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the silver in 2004 and is giving the U.S. a fighting chance at the gold for the first time ever in the 2008 Olympics (the U.S. has never won the 1500m).
His coach, James Li, is from China and several of the top Chinese sports officials are his peers. Does this make a difference in his running? Maybe. Li may help him learn some tricks that will help him run efficiently in China. Not that he needs it–Lagat is the first athlete to become world champion in both the 1,500m and 5,000m at the same IAAF World Outdoor Championships and has several medals in long distance races around the world.
