Quins 2nd XV Gun For Mwamba Cup Trophy

Written by Herbert Mwachiro | September 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The QuinsThe second team take center stage this weekend when they take on KCB ll in the Mwamba Cup final. This is the 3rd successive year that the seconds have been in the final but they have always come short. 2008 gives them another shot at a trophy that has eluded them for a while (they have made eight appearances in the final since 1996 when they last won it).

The rivalry with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) has been an exciting one. The seconds beat them earlier this year to retain, for keeps, the Chairman’s trophy. During the league, each side won against the other away from home. KCB, however, snatched the second division Eric Shirley Shield Championship from the Quins, gaining some revenge for the Chairman’s loss. The Mwamba Cup battle will be the decider as it brings both teams’ seasons to a close. » Read more…

Quins Win Kenya Cup In Sure, Strong And Superior Style

Written by Herbert Mwachiro | September 19, 2008 | Leave a Comment

They came, they saw, and they conquered. With determination, purpose, and commitment the Quins regained the Kenya Cup in style by beating defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) 29-17. What a game it was with one of the largest crowds seen at a league match. Fans got value for money, and stress/anxiety levels were at an all time high. Lunch was served at Dagoretti where the generals destroyed 6 good kilos of roast meat and engaged in several chasers to calm their nerves.

FIFA Promises Free Tickets for Workers

Written by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | September 19, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Sepp BlatterConstruction workers at the 2010 World Cup stadia sites have been promised 40,000 tickets for games during the finals in South Africa. The move was announced by FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, at the end of his four day visit to the host country. There are more than 20,000 workers employed at the 10 sites of the stadiums being built or renovated for the tournament, and FIFA plans to provide each one of the workers with two tickets. That accounts for a third of the allocation of the 120,000 free tickets set aside earlier for South Africans “who have contributed to the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and who could otherwise not afford to be part of this historic event.”

Blatter was in the country to inspect the progress of the construction of the host venues, which are set to cost around $1.2bn. In spite of his severe criticism of the progress of construction at the sites during previous visits, he said it would be a “magnificent event.” » Read more…

I want a piece of Antonio Margarito

Interview by Ameyaw Debrah | September 18, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Joshua Clottey made Ghanaians, and indeed Africans, proud when he challenged and defeated American, Zab Judah to become the IBF Welterweight Champion. However, this feat seems not to be enough for Joshua, who desperately wants to ‘unify’ the IBF title with the WBA title; hence Joshua’s call on WBA Champion Antonio Margarito to give him a shot at the WBA title.

According to the champion, he is very excited about becoming a world champion because that had always been his dream. He says that in spite of the challenges of inadequate training facilities in Ghana, his passion and determination to succeed as a boxer made him the champion he is today. » Read more…

Jelimo Wins IAAF $1 Million Jackpot

Written by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | September 15, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Meseret DefarPamela Jelimo collected the $1 million she won in the IAAF Golden League in style, when she cruised to victory in the women’s 800m, clocking a meet record of 1 minute, 56.41 seconds in Stuttgart, Germany. The Golden League jackpot goes to athletes who win their event in all six stops on the sport’s most lucrative tour and the 18-year-old Kenyan was the only one to do so. But to actually take home the prize, the winners also have to show up at the World Athletics Final. Jelimo did and, in the process, increased her purse by another $30,000 given to first-place winners here.

The Kenyan teenager, who only started running the two-lap race this year, was unbeaten in her 12 finals this year, including the Olympics in Beijing last month. The Olympic Champion did not run hard right from the start, but World Champion Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya finished second (1:58.41), while Briton Marilyn Okoro was third with 1:58.64. Remaining unbeaten, this was Jelimo’s 14th win in a row. “Today I did not have any tactics,” Jelimo said. “I am a sprinter. So I can always rely on my final speed.” Regarding next year the African record holder, and World Junior record holder, (1:54.01) said: “I guess that I have even more talent than I showed in 2008. Next year I want to run even faster.” » Read more…

Ethiopia Expelled From World Cup

Written by Kevin Johnson-Azuara | September 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Ethiopian Football FederationFIFA has announced Ethiopia’s Ethiopia’s expulsion from the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The decision was taken by the Bureau of the Organzing Committee for the FIFA World Cup, and the results from all four matches played by Ethiopia to date in Group Eight are now cancelled.

The Emergency Committee of football’s world governing body had initially suspended the Ethiopia Football Federation (EFF) on July 29 earlier this year. The EFF’s problems began in January when its general assembly fired the federation’s president, Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis, and elected Ahmed Yasin to replace him. However, that January meeting was not recognized by FIFA, who, together with Confederation of African Football (CAF), released a roadmap in February aimed at rectifying the situation. The EFF had agreed to implement the roadmap, but failed to put it into action and was suspended six weeks ago as a result. » Read more…

Stephen Cooper – San Diego Chargers

Written by Shirlene Alusa- Brown | August 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Stephen Cooper, Inside Linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, is serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s banned substance policy.  He tested positive for Ephedra in December 2007, but claims that he was unaware that it was a banned substance despite the fact that it has been illegal in the league since 2001.  Tsk, tsk, Stephen.  What would your mother say (and a Cape Verde mama at that!)?

Stephen Cooper - San Diego ChargersThis is not Cooper’s first brush with the substance abuse police.  His history dates back to 2002 when he was playing for University of Maine and he was caught with possession of 1000 steroid pills.  He was not penalized as possession of steroids as possession of steroids was not an offense by N.C.A.A. standards.  Consequently he went undrafted in 2002 and was drafted by San Diego in 2003. » Read more…

Osi Out For The Season

Written by Shirlene Alusa-Brown | August 25, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Osi Umenyiora is out for the season with a lateral meniscus tear. This doesn’t sound too good for the Giants who relied on the Michael Strahan/Osi Umenyiora teamwork to build a formidable defense. While it is good to hear that he should recover (the doctors state that it is usually a minimum of four months for a recovery to take place, but it varies based on the individual), I can’t help but think that it bodes pretty well for the other teams (read, Cowboys) to have a fighting chance against them.
