The second team take center stage this weekend when they take on KCB ll in the Mwamba Cup final. This is the 3rd successive year that the seconds have been in the final but they have always come short. 2008 gives them another shot at a trophy that has eluded them for a while (they have made eight appearances in the final since 1996 when they last won it).

The rivalry with Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) has been an exciting one. The seconds beat them earlier this year to retain, for keeps, the Chairman’s trophy. During the league, each side won against the other away from home. KCB, however, snatched the second division Eric Shirley Shield Championship from the Quins, gaining some revenge for the Chairman’s loss. The Mwamba Cup battle will be the decider as it brings both teams’ seasons to a close.

Outstanding for the seconds this year have been Kenneth Kiprop, Lameck Juma, Ronald Olewe, Ayub Kimutai, Ben Obengu, John Khakame, Eric Bett, Amos Agiro, Kangethe twins, Collo and Kabao Muruatetu. Veteran Fervant Thumbi has made some appearances and, tomorrow, at some part of the game, his experience will come in handy as the battle for the trophy goes on. Having convincingly beaten Strathmore and Mwamba with 40 plus points each, the Quins ll need to be in high focus tomorrow as they face the last hurdle.

For those who have been wondering what happened to the 1st XV after they won the Kenya Cup, the less said the better. The team was still in party mood as they were bundled out of the Enterprise Cup 33-31 by a last second try in the second period of extra time against Impala. What made it more amazingly and torturously painful is that we led the game 25-9 at halftime and 31-28 with 5 seconds to go! They will definitely be in the stands supporting the seconds tomorrow.
