Streetball - Urban Basketball with an Edge

Streetball - urban basketball with an edge

Streetball is very popular in urban neighborhoods where people get together and play in neighborhood playgrounds and gymnasiums. It is growing in popularity and helping mend communities by providing a positive outlet for children, and an alternative to drugs, crime, and gangs. African players have been featured among the best in the game (yes…Africans ARE everywhere).

Streetball rules vary from court to court, and tend to have more trash-talking, spectacular dunks, innovative ball handling, and a general urban hard-nosed approach. Communities sponsor streetball tournaments, and professional basketball players sometimes lend their time to basketball demonstrations during these matches.

Luol Deng has been involved with basketball camps that feature many streetball players. He is particularly active in London. Talent is rampant in streetball and many of the players feel that they could probably take on the NBA players.

The Street Basketball Association counts among its best, a young man from Sudan called Deng D’Awol who towers above many players at 7 feet. And1, an apparel and shoe company, and ESPN have sponsored streetball tournaments around the world, and their videos are a great mix of hiphop and street basketball moves. The tournaments attract a lot of great talent and has even drawn the attention of NBA talent scouts.

Kenny Olakuton is part of the streetball team in the UK. He is considered a really fast player and has held the successful and popular Sports4Youth basketball camps.

Tayo Odulaja is considered a phenomenal game dunker in the UK, at least according to Streetball.co.uk and this picture seems to prove them right (Tayo Odulaja cleared the car to make the dunk). He is 6 foot 3 inches which makes the jump that much more incredible.

Overall, streetball highlights some of the best dunkers and three-pointers in basketball who are not part of the National Basketball Association. It also showcases relatively unknown talent and gives them an alternate opportunity to play against great undiscovered talent.
