As a stylist and press manager of River Island, Nigerian Uk-based Arieta Mujay has worked with major celebrities like Alek Wek, Tyson Bekford, and Liya Kebede. In an exclusive interview with Jamati Entourage, she shares her advice on what trends Afronista’s should be wearing this summer and her plans for the future.
Jamati: As a Nigerian, do you feel you have a strong connection to Africa and, if so, is that represented in the way you dress?
I definitely feel a very strong connection to Africa as I am African and Africa is in me. In terms of how I dress, not really as I adore all sorts of fashion–from traditional African attire to traditonal Mayan dresses.
Jamati: How did you end up being a stylist and PR manager? Was that something you always wanted to do?
I did lots of internships and got lots of work experience in fashion PR. I had internships with publications such as Smash Hits, Just 17, Sneak, etc. Most of these publications don’t exist anymore but they were relevant in their hey day. I also assisted on fashion shoots and got lucky… its not what you know, its whom!
Jamati: You have worked with many African stars including Oluchi and Alek Wek. Are there any other African celebs you haven’t yet worked with but would like to?
I would LOVE to dress DBanj as I am now transitioning into working with menswear. Its my preference at the moment.
Jamati: Do you have any favorite African designers? If so, who and why?
Deola Sagoe….She is awesome, very inspiring. I also like Lanre Da Silva and Zedeye. Phyllis Sika and Stoned Cherry are fabulous too.
Jamati: What one item of clothing must every Afronista have in her closet?
A fabulous pair of heels as fab accessories would spice up any dull outfit.
Jamati:What advice do you have for younger girls and guys who want to be stylists like you?
First of all, identify what exactly you want from fashion and what areas you want to specialize in. I get contacted by many people who swear they LOVE fashion and that’s about it. That’s not good enough as it’s one thing to love fashion, and another when fashion reciprocates the love. You have to study your area, read magazines, know your designers, know your trends and, most [importantly], get out there and get work experience. Keep mood boards, play around with trends, defy the expected. Think outside the box.

Your looks are delightful and unique. I would have thought it hard to pull off unique and fresh that still had your African influence, but it works really well. I love the colors and there’s a boldness to your look that pulls of even subtle colors well and and in a way that says “Africa.” Love it.
