Delphine Diallo, is an artist born in Paris, to French and Senegalese parents. She graduated from the Académie Charpentier School of Visual Arts in 1999 and worked as a designer and animator for clients in the music and other industries.
She now lives in New York, where she works under many titles including, director, film maker, photographer and video editor, among others. This amazing lady has an impressive resume (CV) that would make your head spin! She is so talented, it would take a lot to cover her work here. However, I am going to give you a brief bio, and lots of eye candy for your artistic souls.
In 2005 she took a trip to Senegal as part of the Magic Photo Studio series in exploration of the cultural identity of her family and also to push herself as an artist.
Since I am not an artist and could not possibly describe her work in terms that would give it justice, I have put an excerpt from the Aperture Foundation, to give us an insight into her work:
“Diallo compresses pattern and image into a single composition; patterns extracted from the textiles, totemic animals, and plants are brought directly into the image itself and layered on top of the portraits. These techniques are drawn from her background as a graphic designer and illustrator. The alchemical mix of painting, sketching, and notation on top of the images also connects the work to a contemporary vein of graphic-novel and graffiti-influenced drawing in the manner of Zak Smith or Margaret Kilgallen. The result is a richly textured and deeply personalized approach to portraiture. —LAM”
