Nonhle Thema- The African Ambassador

Nonnhle Thema- The African Ambassador

Sexy , smart and successful is one way to describe Ms. Nonhle. This 26 year old South African-born beauty is sure to turn heads wherever she goes. Nonhle is a television presenter for one of the most well know television channels in Africa , “Channel O, Africa”. She’s the host of a show called “O’Access“, an hour long intoxicating program filled with interviews from high profile celebrities from around the world.

Nonhle is truly an African ambassador, travelling to places like Portugal, Jamaica, USA, London, Canada, and Africa. She was also at the BET awards, covering the event for Africa.

The list of celebrities she has interviewed include TI, Akon, Kelly Rowland, Eve, 50 Cents, Bundu Bantu, Omarion, Bow Wow, Chris Brown, Nelly Furtado, Ne-Yo, John Legend, Tyrese, Mary J Blidge, and Pharrell William. Nonhle is also a model and the face of Legit clothing line, one of South Africa’s biggest brands. She is also one of the 100 sexiest FHM magazine women for 2008.

We caught up with her whilst in LA shooting the third season for her show and this is what she had to say:

Jamati: Well thanks for letting us in to your O’Access world! Please share brief biography about yourself?

Nonhle Thema: I’m just a God chosen individual who is filling her purpose so one day I can leave a legacy behind. Along with being a marketing grade student I also started my career modeling, doing TV commercials, and participating in beauty contests. It runs in the family–my mom was one of the first black women to enter Miss World in 1972. After doing all these things I just had to pursue television presenting since it was a dream of mine. Mostly importantly I do what I do because of my mother, the pillar of my strength, and God. It’s only fair that I continue her legacy and fulfill my God given purpose.

Jamati: Share what the O’Access movement is all about and how it came to be this successful?

Nonhle Thema: The O’Access is a gift from God to me and Africa. It is the hottest music show and my blessing. I pride myself in having made history with the show. Tis the first of its kind in Africa where a host gets up close with international stars. I have become the African Ambassador. I’m proud to represent my continent and it has been a journey worth living. Its thanks to my fans that the show has become this big and now I’m actually shooting season three, its phenomenal. I’m living proof that the impossible is possible.

Nonnhle Thema - Interviews celebrities

Jamati: Having interviewed high profile celebrities, who would you say you enjoyed talking to the most?

Nonhle Thema: I’d have to say 50 Cent, he was the hottest and he started showing me his bullet wounds and he revealed information that was just mind blowing . It was amazing when he started explaining the story behind his wounds and his love for God …yes God. Now I know why he is so successful and all that gangster stuff is just an image.

Jamati: What has the highlight of your career been?

Nonhle Thema: Being “The African Ambassador” has been the most amazing highlight for me. I get to show the Americans the good side of Africa not just the bad side of people dying. I feel in my people’s voice, and through the show, they travel the journey with me. It’s an honour.

Jamati: Tell us more about the BET awards experience?

Nonhle Thema: That was an awesome place to be, all the American journalists were there doing their thing, and me coming from Africa– everybody wanted to come to me and get the African magic….hehehe.

Jamati: Out of all your travels which place would you say was the most breathtaking?

Nonhle Thema: I’ve been to many places like London, Jamaica, Portugal, and USA, but I’d have to say Toronto, Canada, because it was the cleanest city I’ve ever seen . They have a zero tolarance for bad behavier and untidyness…..thats deep.

Jamati: What should viewers look out for in season three of your show?

Nonhle Thema: It’s going to be sizzling hot. I’m shooting a brand new countdown show called “Street Bangers” that’s going to be hot. I love my job, no joke, and I guarantee you I won’t disappoint.

Jamati: How would you diffrentiate the SA entertainment industry from the American industry?

Nonhle Thema: Its definitely different, but we have great artists all over Africa that, if they were recognized in the USA, would walk away with most of the grammies. Artists from Nigeria; Angola is amazing; and artists in South Africa have upped their game. My favourites right now are Jub Jub, Hip Hop Pantsula, and Kold Products.

Jamati:Tell us more about the your reaction when you first heard that you were chosen as one of the FHM’s 100 sexiest women?

Nonhle Thema: That was CRAZYYYYYYYY…..being on the top 100 sexiest list in the world. Its an honor. Funny enough, I’ve never seen myself as sexy…..it’s weired….I’m very excited..as always I say it’s God’s love shining through me…….but most of all I think people find my personality sexy more than my physical being.

Jamati: Any plans for the future?

Nonhle Thema: Well I’m producing and writting my own script for my show the O’Access–I’m slowly getting behind the scenes. You see am at a place were hosting is not enough for me anymore. I want to spread my wings…

I also have a Nonhle Thema Angels program at home where I try to uplift, inspire, and encourage young girls to be the best that they can be. Only with Gods help can I help them understand that there is more to life than just mere existence. Its all about upliftment, encouragement, contribution, encouragement and so much more… This program is dedicated to my late Aunt, Khanyisile Angel Shange.

Jamati: Your favorite all-time quote that keeps you going in life?

Nonhle Thema: ” Don’t ask yourself what the world needs but ask yourself what it is that makes you come alive, then go out there and do it. The world needs more people that come alive.

Jamati: Anything else that you would like to share with us?

Nonhle Thema: I wanted people to know that I owe my success to my boss, Ayanda Maswazi Tshabalala, who just passed away–a big thank you to him. It’s all because of him I’m still standing in this tough industry. He and his family believed in me when no one else did. He planted a seed in me that I will never forget, and those words of wisdom he shared with me are what keeps me going always (plus my love for my mom and God).

Jamati: Can we expect you to be a major part of the USA industry anytime soon?

Nonhle Thema: You know what I’m the type of person who listens to God’s plan for my life…I believe I’m not in control, and if its part of my destiny then it shall be…..only time will tell.

Jamati: Ms. Ambassador, thank you for your time and keep on keeping on! lol

Nonhle Thema: Holla back………..
