Summer is finally here and that means lots of festivals, events, and opportunities for us to spot our favorite African celebs. Here are a few that were seen about town.
Arieta Mujay talks Fashion.
As a stylist and press manager of River Island, Nigerian Uk-based Arieta Mujay has worked with major celebrities like Alek Wek, Tyson Bekford, and Liya Kebede. In an exclusive interview with Jamati Entourage, she shares her advice on what trends Afronista’s should be wearing this summer and her plans for the future.

We haven’t heard anything about Estelle for a while. She has been a little under the weather. Maybe she was still shaken up by the fact that she was in the same area where Dolla got shot. Anyway, she is none the worse for wear, and busy marketing herself in true Estelle style. She performed at the Museum of Modern Art, helped H&M highlight Fashion Against AIDS, and performed at the Grammy Celebration Concert Tour. Yup, she’s back!
Rapper, Wale, performed at the Sway and .Tel Pre Movie Awards Celebration and Korto Momolu helped aspiring designers realize their dreams at the 1st Annual African Fashion Designer’s Competiton. Alek Wek looked fabulous in yellow but was sporting an orange cast at the 2009 Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Seal was in Turkey at the Mardan Palace Hotel in Antalya, Turkey to perform at the grand opening. Overall, it was not too hectic a weekend. Let’s see what next weekend brings.

Akon helped Radio 1 celebrate their big weekend. Alek Wek was at a show titled “The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion”, hosted by the Costume Institute Gala.
Charlize Theron was spotted at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Annual National Tribute Dinner. Amobi Okoye was spotted at the Kentucky Derby with Tom and Donna Joyner. Interested in possibly looking fly, Kenna helped launch Carrera’s new line of sunglasses.

Weekend Buzz
Estelle is back! She is busy running around attending events around the country. I don’t know anyone who works as hard as she does.
Idris Elba is having a stellar year already. His new movie ‘Obsessed‘, filmed with Beyonce Knowles, was the highest grossing film taking in $28.5 million in ticket sales for Sony Corporation. It beat ‘Mean Girls‘ for the for the best last-April-weekend opening ever. He was also sighted at a pre-draft party with Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan, and at the British Academy Television Awards.

Ataui Deng – The New Kid On The Block
Brace yourselves fashion world, there’s a hot new face in town. She is sizzling and she is related to a top model whose grace and elegance have made her a favorite on and off the runway. Stunning and elegant, it is hard to believe that she is only 17.
Deng signed with Trump Management in New York in 2008 and she walked the fall African Fashion Collective and Christian Siriano shows in New York. Many say that she is Alek Wek’s niece. There is a strong resemblance. She is definitely one to watch.

The Tribeca Ball was in full swing at the New York Academy of Art, and Alek Wek, lent her beauty to the occasion.
Design Indaba showcased phenomenal designers in South Africa, including Soulchild, Carducci, I Love Leroy, Hip Hop, and Craig Native.

Joy Denalane was at the Echo 2009 awards and Alek Wek was at the London Fashion week doing her thing (looking fabulous as always) in MOMO wear. Jourdan Dunn also modeled the MOMO line.
Former Botswana President, Festus Mogae, and designer Ozwald Boateng showed up to support Julianne Moore’s Diamonds in Africa cause. An Obama artist brought Damon Dash and his son out to party, and Idris Elba supported an AIDS cause.

African Designs to Be Part of New York Fashion Week
ThisDay will be launching their magazine, Arise at the New York Fashion Week. The launch will take place at the Bryant Park Tents and will feature the creative fashion design talents of Xuly Bet of Mali, Stoned Cherrie of South Africa, and MOMO and Tiffany Amber of Nigeria. New York is definitely in for a treat!
Ubah Hassan – Vogue Italia Got It Right
Ubah Hassan, a Somalian model, was chosen to be part of the historic issue of Vogue Italia which featured some of the hottest names in the model world. She held her own among famous names like Alek Wek and Liya Kebede, and proved she has what it takes to be a model icon.
She signed with Click Management Agency in New York in 2007 and was the model of the week on Models.com in May of 2008. In July of 2008 she was one of the models in the black issue of Vogue Italia (not bad for a newcomer). She closed Ralph Lauren’s spring show in New York and is now part of a Ralph Lauren ad campaign. Busy lady, and we can see why!
